Electronic Music other: Return of the Vista blogs

So i was wondering everyone is coping with vista?
I just got a pretty nice new Lenovo Thinkpad. I jumped the gun and formatted the entire thing thinking i would be cool and i nstall winxp pro x64 on it since my school has a program that gives us all nice MS software. Anyway, this has been a hairpulling day. I am unable to even get 64bit ATI graphics drivers for the thing; so its almost useless.

So i am considering reinstalling Vista Business 64bit. Does anyone have any experience using it for music? I did a search and it seems to be over a year since somoene has commented on it in the blogs?
Is the consensus still bad.

I work in IT so i know everyone hates it, but I want to try the new "64 bit" software/OSes and my computer is pretty fast. (2.53ghz core 2 and 4gb of ram)

I am installing it right now, so someone speak quick or its going on;
I figured if it bothers me too much I will just throw on XP 32.

I HATE VISTA 100%
wtf. its using 1gb of memory immediately after startup.
+1 for hating vista

I hate when an OS thinks it knows what I want to do w/ my data....or that I'm too stupid to know that .exe files can be hazardous.
Why on earth would I want my OS to ask me if I'm sure I want to run the exe I just clicked on EVERY SINGLE TIME?!?!?!?!
Pro-Vista people always go: well you can turn those things off. Yes I can. But I shouldn't have to. All the idiots should have to turn those things ON!
In all honesty I hope dev.s never stop developing for xp32 because I'll be using it until I die. I'm sure macs are great and I'm sure aero is really pretty and I'm sure linux will not be a clusterfuck of open source crap some day (I mean seriously why do i have to connect to the internet to view my program manager HUH?!?!?!), but until then I'm all xp. I got the student version for 35$ back in the day and it's worth every penny. It rarely crashes or BSOD anymore and when you need to hack some part of the os (say to boot from an external usb hdd) it's usually pretty easy.
That being said xp is not perfect by any means, but in terms of ease of use and pretty good development it's easily an A or B+
Reminds me of the win98 -> xp switch. I didn't switch over until there was software that wouldn't run on 98. Reaktor 5 was what did it in the end. Eventually I learned all the little xp tricks and at this point I'm more comfortable with xp than I ever was with 98.

Vista probably isn't that bad once you've got it configured properly. But, I won't be using it unless I get a new computer.

windows 7

it's also windows 6.1. oh yeah ........
i installed a linux distro on this new laptop before i put on vista, but the KDM wouldnt load it was really annoying not having a gui.
All i have open right now is firefox and its really annoying that there is 1.15GB of ram being used. In XP it would be like 300MB. I am just too lazy to reinstall everything and go through all the drivers, but I think it may be worth it.
I was going to suggest either 64bit versions Ubuntu or Fedora. I downloaded them both last week to install on my MBP to see how they run.

I got a laptop the other day from the new IT suppliers who have taken over the contract where I work and it had Vista on it. I emailed the contract manager and asked to have it removed and XP put on it instead or I wouldnt use it. As a result, they have recalled all [engineers] laptops on the contract to build them with XP instead!!!
Vista is fine
i have the occasional problem with my graphics because i only have 1 gig ram (no dedicated graphics)

and as a result when im using reaper with a lot of fx it stutters sometimes
but i know thats my fault

vista is fine (but shitty... but fine)
vista is fine. It works well with everything i got.
Vista can be ok in just the right situation- I only say that because I don't understand it especially well yet. But let's just say that my experiences with it have NOT been positive. I have never demanded that something be replaced before, but I had to pull a Zanf on one last week. One of my Vista machines was sharing a printer, developed some sort of memory leak issue on our print server, and crashed the print server for the entire school district i manage. If I locked down all Vista machines and removed them from my server, no problems. That's not just a bug- that's a catastrophe. And i know the issue was fixed with an upgrade... but have you ever looked at Vista's upgrade hell? Check for updates- nothing. Check again- found 22 critical updates. Restart, find a thousand more, etc.
Now don't even get me started on the generation of borderline unusable laptops I've had to try and rollback- unbelievable that anyone is still buying this crap at all. And don't turn off the warnings(UAC)- it can sometimes prevent you from adding hardware, and not tell you why- another hard lesson learned. If you just want to make music, not fight your OS, not explore your options, etc. just get XP. I love Linux, using KDE right now. But really, it's just another distraction keeping me from working on music if I put it on the music PC. Just get yourself something to change the XP GUI if you're tired of looking at it.
One thing I've come to find with vista,

it likes to think it's being helpful when really its fucking pain in the ass and i want to shoot it..

It preemptively shuts down applications if it think too much stress is being placed on your video card...
Even though its just a minor jump in performance, it kills the program you're running, rather than just letting a little momentary glitch in framerate occur. fucking bullshit... Checked temperatures on everything and its all well within safe limits... and according to performance meters its not even near 90% useage of anything when it kills the app.
