About me
Obsessed with early obscure minimal electronic music from the late 70's and early 80's....would love to meet others for collaboration, dorking out, trading music, and learning more!
My Gear
Really just getting started learning how to create electronic music after fiddling around with various techniques and synths over the past 7 years. I have settled on hardware- an MPC 1000, Nord Lead and Electribe drum machine.
Electronic Music other: Hi- and I really like it here.

Hi Everyone. I just discovered this site today when I googled the phrase "frustration creating electronic music" after feeling a dire urge to slam my head into the wall in my studio while suffering from a creative/technological block. I opened my laptop in desperation- just wanting to read that someone somewhere was feeling the same and I needing to know how they dealt with it. After finding a wonderful blog post about someone's very similar experiences, I started poking about on the site, I felt quite at home and decided to join.

Not sure if new folks typically post a little expose about themselves or what but here's mine...

My main passion is DIY gritty minimal synth/electro-pop from the late 70's/early 80's like Absolute Body Control and ADN' Ckrystall. I also love more recent minimal house and techno coming out of Europe over the past few years.

Even though I've been working with various electronic music tools for the past seven years, I am really just starting to learn how to compose electronic music. It seems like that is common here with a lot of people as well. It sometimes takes a while to get rolling with it since learning how to use the tools takes so much dedicated time. I have so many creative projects that I work on daily- sadly music has taken the back-burner until very recently.

After fiddling fruitlessly with various software and digital hardware synths with their endless menus, I settled on a hardware setup with an MPC 1000, a Nord Lead keyboard, and a Korg Electribe drum machine. I also use an echo/tape delay simulation pedal. After feeling like I just might be getting the MPC1000 under my grasp a little, I invested in a little Fostex digital multi-tracker so I could use it as a sketchpad for vocals and live percussion. So many little boxes with knobs, so little time...

I've lived in Brooklyn, NY for about a year and a half. I go out to lots of shows but I don't really have any friends that are as excited as I am about electronic music. Somehow I just have other types of friends. Bah. If anyone out there would like to go to some shows together, that would be lovely.

I do a weekly 1-hour music mix podcast called Electro-Magnetism where I play some of my favorite songs. You can find a link to it through my blog, as well as some other things I'm interested in.

what os are you running on the mpc1000?
welcome, willkommen, bienvnue, aloha, hola, caio and hello.
infradead - the ancient one that came with the machine. I would love to switch to JJ, however since my card reader is broken I installed an internal HD but I am still unable to upgrade the OS without a card reader for various reasons... I haven't felt like plunking down the $150 or so to get the card reader replaced in order to upgrade. I feel like once I master the current OS and understand its limitations then I'll be ready...for now I still have along way to go.

And thanks for the welcome nightowl!
oach!

hahaha just wait...you haven't met pawel yet.
Fredo- I do love the Silver Apples. Have you heard Bergheim 34's cover of Oscillations?

infradead- IRC eats my soul. Must. Stay. Far. Away.

Thanks for the nice welcomes everyone!
no! I will look it up. Oscillations is one of my favorites. how about White Noise? Do you like them too?
Fredo- I haven't heard them before... is there an album you recommend? I love Delia Derbyshire's work and I think she was in the band at one point?
hi lark

you can learn a lot from mixits link

it's an em411 thing where members submit samples and everyone has a month to make a track out of them

have fun, stay cool
I've only heard their album An Electric Storm, but I can recommend that personally.

The United States of America's self-titled album is also worth listening to if you like that stuff.

And welcome!
Welcome Lark! I posted a blog on my own frustrations link and received some great replies. However, I still don't like the music making process and mostly just settle for being a gear whore.
If you post a release here, good criticism is often the norm.
