Electronic Music review: Numerology v2
Store Written January 02 2009 , Tags: modular, numerology, sequencer
So Numerology, my favourite piece of music software has finally been updated to version 2. Jim (the developer) has put an enormous amount of work into this new version and it really shows. The same discrete analog style sequncing is still there, but contained within a much more fluid and easy to use framework. The most noticeable refinement is the interface, much cleaner and with a Reason-style patchbay on the back of each module. Modulation of any parameter is now just one right-click away, thanks to a context menu which will drop in envelopes, LFOs and control sequencer automatically patched in and ready to start working their magic. I've only spent a day or so with the new version so far, but there have been so many improvements and short cuts in my workflow - it really is a joy to use!

Numerology now has built in sample processing with an Audio Sample and Drum Kit module, and it now also features an Envelope Follower which converts audio data into CV for modulation. All of the modulation within Numerology is CV, so I imagine it would be the perfect tool for controlling older synths. the CV can of course be converted into CC date for plugins or more modern synths.

The MIDI sync is very tight. Running Numerology from my G3 iBook via an Edirol UM1 interface into my MPC 2000 gave me only 3 ticks of latency!

All in all this a great update of an already great piece of software. If you've got $100 bucks left over from Christmas, and you don't know what to spend it on, give the demo a whirl - it's fully functional (but with no save).

And an excellent series of demo videos from Jim himself.

well - look at it this way:
Price of 16 step analogue sequencer, eg Analogue Solutions Oberkrom MK 3 = $999

Price of second hand G3 iBook + midi interface + behringer BCR2000 + Numerology = about $550

There's never been a better time to get a Mac
numerology is tits, though i never found time to really put use into it.
If I have Logic 8 and Ableton 6, what can I get out of this this besides a different work flow? I'm asking because, I really dig the interface and just might try it out. :-]
there are tons o fpossiblities to sequence more like in a modular enviroment. having different outputs feed back into other inputs and stuff. there quite unsual sounding sequences and stuff possible.
aligak - among other things, you can:

add complex cross-modulating LFOs to any VST or VSTi
generate beats using LFOs, envelopes, different loop lengths/time signatures/clock times
use divisor sequencers to create crazy trills
modulate pitches of melodies to create weird harmonic intervals
make very funky basslines by switching between gate sequencers in triplet and dotted time

basically, the best way to find out what Numerology can do is to download the demo
and what yghartsyrt said
for Live it is the shit. It would be worth the price alone just for the LFOs. Honest.
i forgot all about this app. modular sequencing is the main thing i miss from the nord G2. now i don't miss the G2 as much... gotta scrounge up 100 bux tho.

Great software made greater! I've been a user since the beginning but this version just blew my mind open! The Rewire is really useful and so are the new features which add to the variety in possibilities. Go through the demo videos and try out the demo; if you're into modular stuff you'll love Numerology 2.

A G3 iBook will only allow you to run Numerology as a sequencer, forget about plugins and the new included sampler and beat box. You may use it without a controller too (cheaper but not as hands on).
yeah - i never do audio stuff directly with Numerology. I use it to sequence and play audio in other apps or in hardware
skab meant that lysdexic could buy a used intel dual core iBook for $500. that would be plenty to run numerology 2 with all the bells and whistles.
