say you were to hear of a new amazing style of music.
how would you go about exploring it?
here's some of my approaches:
1. ideally, I find a guide. this is someone who loves the style, has lived with it for years, and has a healthy respect for the geographics and history. they know all the big names and also have a personally developed taste that steers them near the fringes. they can tell you what is different about their favorite artists.
2. various wikis, toobs. this is another way. I can explore in a self-directed way. this takes longer because I have to listen and dig through a lot of extraneous stuff. I am getting better at that part. this has the additional benefit of being able to be quite cross-referenced, and I like to dig through time period and geographical area.
3. usually i don't like music press, even if it's dedicated to a genre with love. i think music should flow through fans, rather than through gatekeepers. there's obviously a lot of grey area here, and people can have great blogs and labels that are run for the love of music. those are great.

i don't know if this is sad or very very cool but i normally hear something i like and then ask my dad, who is pretty much what you describe in point 1 for a lot of the stuff i listen to. lucky me
 interresting, only "new" thing i heard of was idm, glitch music, i found all the usual suspects (all the warp dudes) and since i just kept informed via the usual channels. Now i discover old music, from before my time. which are usually well documented on the net
+ I usually look at the l;abel's roster, hit the name of the "new" band i like on last.fm or when i am in the states on pandorra radio.
just ask around at guitar center.
i sadly mostly use lists and reviews... which is crappy cause it results in "discovering" music the hipsters think is cool.

Also, there are a lot of great music blogs, like Mutant Sounds. pandora seems to be pretty good

I don't rate, but I hope it matches you on 14 dimensions of compatibility mostly it's just friends, who introduce me to new genres and music. luckily enough lots of of my friends share a complete different taste in music – with some overlaps here and there. so basically they have a feeling what i might dig and quite often they are right.
plus some blogs and asking people in record stores result in some great finding. nothing really beat digging through crates of records. especially in stores you don't visit often or even for the first time and carries music one usually doesn't listen to also, i'm writing for magazines and get quite a bit of promo cds and stuff. i only listen to emo.
mtv keeps me updated. astroboy said: "i only listen to emo. mtv keeps me updated." LOL(?) why listen to new music, when msft can help u make your own?!?!
