Electronic Music other: Guzheng and Prepared Piano
Store Written February 02 2009
I started studying Chinese Guzheng and researching techniques on creating music with a "prepared" instrument. I found this to be one of the most beautiful pieces I have heard in a long time. link

And while searching around for music, material with bowed/prepared piano, I found Stephen Scott, and highly recommend "New Music for Bowed Piano" link

Enjoy!

i *heart* guzheng and prepared piano!

edit: thanks.
WoW! amazing stuff.
stephen scott is the shit!
wow, that first one is indeed beautiful. thanks for sharing.
Guzheng piece was super great...so many effects and sounds!

Can you talk a little bit about the techniques used to play it?

Also, here is 'Gending Erhu', one of my favorite pieces: link (gamelan and ehru)
this plays really well over it: link
That first piece is absolutely amazing.
Thank you lowli, I'm totally inspired by Yuan Sha. That was amazing... I could hardly move while that piece played.

The prepared piano stuff turned out to be the best part of the Stormdrum plugin.
Loved the Guzheng piece! so awesome.
Ming Shan means something like Snow Mountain or something. The original composer of it is a professor at the University in Beijing I believe.

The player uses smoothed tortoise shell picks taped on the fingers. I am still getting used to it myself. The amazing stuff is hard to find, but the Yuan Sha performance is really respresentative of the newer school playing Guzheng. Lots of people bowing, using objects and whatever else to play, just like prepared piano. I really have no idea if this was taking from John Cage's era.
the brushy slides she's doing with the left hand are really interesting...like the sound and texture of those.
the climax from ~ 7:00 thru is pretty amazing stuff. those runs are mind bending
more gu zheng action.

Brilliant! I've been trying to find a quality gu zheng soloist recording for years now. Yuan Sha's album is it! If only I could find it for sale somewhere other than a really sketchy looking site.
the yuan sha piece. wow.
