I feel like I may be the last person to discover this wonderful animation, but just in case anybody has yet to see it this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen:

i loved this. thanks!!
me too!!!
totally beautiful.
love how there was such a fine balance between animation and live that it's never really clear how it was actually made... any ideas?
I'm glad you both liked it.

There's a small bit about Norstein's studio in this documentary (it starts at almost exactly 5 minutes in):

It does somewhat explain the depth of image he creates, but I can't see how he blends the animation with the live action personally.
this is great
stunningly beautiful!

I love animation, especially when its dark and grainy
great stuff. thanks for posting.
jesus that is good. never heard of it before. theres a crazy level of dimensionality to it. I guess you'd do the graded smoke with acetate layers of airbrushed white fog sandwiching the characters...but as for the water mixed with characters...shit - rear projection with cutout on top? no idea.

judging by the video theres a big multiplane camera system there but being used in a much more immediate and experimental way than disney (which was really just for depth of field) did. for the water then you'd have all the frames of filmed water printed out and layer the hedgehog on top, frame by frame in sequence.
