start by humming:

Mahna Mahna
Do doo be-do-do
Mahna Mahna
Do do-do do
Mahna Mahna
Do doo be-do-do be-do-do be-do-do be-do-do-doodle do do do-doo do!
i start by recording zanf humming.
no, i kid. i usually don't have specific goals when making music.
Zanf's blue da boo de da boo da...
srsly though when i want to make some music but don't really have a direction i usually get out the ms2000r and just play...
I'm a knob junkie so i usually play a chord into the arp and tweak it until i feel like crashing...(usually late at night)
When it comes to software I typically load up Acid Pro 6 and just start dropping drum beats into a track until i find something i like then toss a nice hook over it and go from there.
not having a direction is great. just go for the pure wank, start three things to brush the cobwebs off, then choose something and go for it.
Im going through something similar.

What I do is put out a MASSIVE AMOUNT of absolute crap.

and then, I listen to this song alot
link

and then im ready for the koolaid.
kickdrum on 1, 5, 9, 13
then some acid
do something simple and fun like 1-step techno
or invent a bunch of rules to follow so you have less choices so youre not questioning yourself over every decision

Nah...you need to listen to this song: link then you ARE the koolaid
i generally start with a cowbell on 1, 5, 9 etc and a meat-slap on 3, 7, 11 etc. get my bellslap rhythm going. from there i just jam with my recorder till i find a hook i can translate into some sort ripping 70s synth lead...
somtimes i double the clap on the 13
For me it starts with an experience I've had, or an emotion I want to capture. The hardest part is when I am in the studio and I am not feeling inspired and I try to force the inspiration. That never works out. So then I go out an have life experiences, or smoke some weed, get lost in my head, and noodle away.
I always start with a really good title.

It doesn't help but at least you can give an answer when people say "What are you working on?"
I pull out a couple of cables, move some effects box or gear in and out of the rig. Then I start gear up, do some sound checks, which become sound experiments, which progress into songs. or not. but it definitely gets the ice broken.
