Electronic Music other: What do you do to keep your music original?
Store Written April 09 2009 , Tags: software, originality
What do you do to keep your sound unique? I've been thinking lately about how I can differentiate my sound from others, when so much of what I use (Ableton, RADIAS, Operator, etc) is readily available and used by others? I don't use samples much. I did most of my first album in Buzz, using samples and some synthesizers, but I can't really be bothered to track anymore. I've thought of using Reaktor, but isn't everyone using Reaktor? Is it just a matter of doing your best with what you've got? Should I let this desire to be different impact my buying desicions? Should I pick up the accordion and join Turisas?

it's a difficult thing...i just focus on making stuff that sounds good to me/ is it unique? probably not. This sounds pretty unique though!

you think too much.
you're lucky if someone says they think you sound like someone they know.
old crap that nobody thinks about anymore

the majority of sounds and sequences have to be hand-crafted.

I always try to mimick something and just hope that I am original enough.
Also,

Set Goals.
It's pretty much impossible to be truly original now, just fucking make the music you love and forget all that bullshit.

yeah, you're going to be original by accident..
as said above, focus on what sounds good to you... buy the software that are the most intuitive and make stuff sound the best... if you want to be purely original your stuff will be completely inaccessible to others (and to yourself). you should be looking for clever adaptation, not originality.
Boy, you guys are so encouraging.

Just make music on your own terms...and don't feel like you have to be like anyone else. In fact, ignore current trends and follow an obsession to a point where no one else can figure out what you are doing.

at the risk of repeating what's already been said... fuck what everyone else does/says/plays, just make some shit and have fun doing it.

Really i always thought that was called noise....until RDJ.
Don't worry about it. Every song is unique. Just make a lot of them.
I think that if your music represents your experiences, in a contemporary context, then it has value.

"Original" work doesn't necessarily have any value. It is unimportant.
i think eyesine has a good point in saying every song is unique. possibly because each song is automatically colored by the person who crafts it. if you're concentrating on the styles and sounds of others than it will sound like their music only colored by your own personal style which can never be duplicated.

so ya, what they said.
