had our first break-in yesterday. kicked in the basement door, ran upstairs and stole my powerbook. left my wife's tibook, which was another floor up.
my laptop was in the living room. they must have seen it through the window.
as far as i can tell, nothing else was taken. left the tv, stereo, dvds, and all the other stuff easily liquidated.
nothing in my studio was taken, which is a huge relief.
didn't lose much on the laptop. 98% of my music stuff was backed up. the thief walked right by my external harddrive and left it...
which brings me to a question:
i use cubase. cubase does not have a universal binary yet and probably won't for the next 6 months or more (based on my last look at cubase.net . my laptop was from work, so it'll get replaced with a macbook pro. will my existing copy of cubase sx 3 be even remotely usable on the macbook???

that totally sucks about the thievery - fortunately they were really stupid, as most criminals tend to be, and missed out on your stash of vintage gear.
guess you should've moved a few blocks farther north. touch wood, but in almost 6 yrs we haven't had a spot of trouble (fingers crossed). too many dumb-ass meth-heads on queen street.

This reminds me of when thieves broke into my storage rental. I had one keyboard case near the front with nothing in it, and they opened it, saw it empty and threw it to the side. They stole all of my vinyl, but totally missed three synths and a portable 19 inch rack full of effects modules, with one of the synths sitting right out in the open. No real regrets on the vinyl though, as I had recorded and remastered all of it to CDR years before. Only a handfull were worth any collector's value.
But anyway, good to hear no data was lost. Backing things up is the smartest thing you can ever do with software.

Sorry. What a horrible feeling
Seems to be a common thing these days. I rarely leave my laptop anywhere these days...

I dont want to put the shits up you at all Jef but you should make sure that the place is very secure now. The theif might have got a look and has cased the flat for later.
Having taken the laptop that you said was in view sounds like it was purely opportunistic but better to err on the side of caution.

Crappy minisystem... but lucky it was the laptops. If that thief saw the crazy booty in your studio they'll surely be back, get some big secure locks.

as a precaution with your next laptop, you should get pgp and encrypt the entire drive. that way if it is stolen then zero data will be readable by anybody else. they will have to buy a new hard drive (or steal one) if they want any functionality.

GnuPG just encrypts the data, it doesnt render the drive unusable as it can just be re-formatted.
Im surprised we havent been burgled yet considering how many crackheads are round these parts.
