had our first break-in yesterday. kicked in the basement door, ran upstairs and stole my powerbook. left my wife's tibook, which was another floor up.
my laptop was in the living room. they must have seen it through the window.
as far as i can tell, nothing else was taken. left the tv, stereo, dvds, and all the other stuff easily liquidated.
nothing in my studio was taken, which is a huge relief.
didn't lose much on the laptop. 98% of my music stuff was backed up. the thief walked right by my external harddrive and left it...
which brings me to a question:
i use cubase. cubase does not have a universal binary yet and probably won't for the next 6 months or more (based on my last look at cubase.net . my laptop was from work, so it'll get replaced with a macbook pro. will my existing copy of cubase sx 3 be even remotely usable on the macbook???

shit, that's really pants. sorry to hear that
it's another slap for me to wake up and get insurance for my gear and CDs though. my place isn't easily broken-into but still, I would hate to be unplesantly surprised one day.

yeah, thanks all for the words of support and advice. definitely feeling a bit better now, even after my insurance company told me to bugger off and i found out that my work insurance has a $2500 deductable (deliberately set to deter claims against the most common theft of laptops...). so, basically, i have to pay for a replacement out of my own pocket.
the cop that came was convinced this was the work of 'stupid kids' who are looking for trouble after a long summer and not some well-organized crackheads looking to score. so, that is a slight relief and probably suggests that we won't be targeted again.
i hear what zanf is saying about theives now having seen what the place has and coming back for more, but even the cop was like 'what the hell is all this weird stuff?'. definitely not easy to liquidate. she knocked on all the doors to tell the neighbors that there'd been a break-in, so hopefully people will be more aware over the coming weeks.
the irony is that i discovered the break-in when i took my contractor down to the basement to show him the door i wanted replaced with a more secure door and we found the existing door kicked in. whooops.

When I travelled in India, I heard so many stories of people getting stuff stolen while they slept on trains. One young lady from a group of girls that were on our flight out had her passport, money & trainers ripped off while they were sleeping on the train back to Mumbai to get a flight home!
If I sleep on trains I have to either wrapped my arms around the handles of my bag or lay on it.
Sorry to hear about your loss Beniflip. Is there any upside to your story? [backed up data/insurance/etc?]

sorry to hear that my misery has found some company.
but, the silver lining is that, like you, i didn't really lose that much data thanks to relatively requent backups onto an external drive. i've been changing passwords like crazy though...

Glad to hear most of the data's okay though, as losing that would be the most distressing to me. I hope you change insurance companies too, as that's a pretty mean policy.
This is one of the reasons I'm so worried about playing live - if I lost my laptop that'd be it for live shows. I've got it insured with a musical insurance company and have a lock so I can secure it if possible, but usually I can't if it's just on a table.
It's a shame there are so many scumbags out there incapable of understanding how that loss feels...

For those of you who travel and/or tour and also make music on the road, you should look into purchasing an online backup solution. That way your data can be backed up daily/nightly and you are never without access to your most recent changes. And keep a credit card or bank balance, if you can, available at all times to replace your hardware immediately in the case of accident or theft. That way you reduce your downtime and/or earnings as a result of accident or theft. An insurance company will not replace items right away. There are also insurance policies that can be taken out for touring musicians - they can be expensive, so shop around and get the most specific and comprehensive policy that you can afford.
