link look at this
then this: link
first off, I'm fucking amazed that I can pull up 2 things on the internet randomly and they actually match....(the news lies, but I didn't need to tell you that)
second off, I am fucking screwed right now. I am currently driving 70 miles round trip to sell sammy kershaw tickets for the firefighters for 8$ an hour....now only part-time because I apparently suck at selling this. I'm not going to go into detail about the job, and how depressing it is and why, because that's not important right now.
[b] what's important right now, is I need to know what computer skillz I need to aquire at my community college. (pell grants are awesome) thankfully, I have a shit ton (possibly most, if not all) core-classes under my belt.
a friend of mine reccomended an associates in IT..... but right now I have no fucking clue.
please people, tell me what I should go into in order to feed my family.
my wife thinks I should get some sort of field or job that doesn't involve interaction with people too much.
please help
wit's end

try not to despair, things will come along. i got laid off a while back and am in school just like millions of other folks. picking a functional 'career' helps me to sleep at night amidst the chaos. make a decision and go for it. i picked nursing??? you can always change your mind once you have better clarity. pell grants are beautiful.

I have no idea how to give advice to people who haven't had family support to give them some time to figure things out. All I can say is: think big, act big. Confidence is more important than anything else.

the only advice i can give is to spend a few hours trawling websites that feature IT job offers. Look for the jobs with the best salaries at entry level (ie non-managerial), also look for jobs that offer a good benefit package or training. Then look at the qualifications needed for those jobs and check how long it would take you to get those qualifications - try to arrive at a good trade-off between potential salary and the amount of time you'd have to invest.

Yeah, if you wanna 'fast track' yourself into a job, try going for a Microsoft MCSA type certification, I think it's 3-4 tests... that can at least get you in the door around $45-50k if you land a basic system admin job.

You might already be aware of this but just in case......
The WIC program is nice. We used it when we were in school with 2 kids. It will get you a bunch of food monthly for the ninyo.
There are also other types of assistance for families like yours. Use it if you can I say. When times are better, you will pay it back 10 times over for sure.

Did you mean C++?
If you worked hard you could become 'reasonable' within a year...
Probably not a good quick solution though, since if you go for programmer, you will have to be competing with people that have computer science degrees, or have already written their own programs as a portfolio, that they started when they were 8 years old etc..

get started on an associates in computer science, get a book on getting your a+ certification, and make long term plans to get your mcse. you've got to be willing to choose a job that's worth money in your region though- check craigslist in a nearby city. then check craigslist in a place you might like to live. you're going to find that wages and opportunities are awful in general in your area. I respect loving where you're from, but once you get your schooling you could be the best sysadmin ever and never get a foot in the door if you're not willing to move.
I have a lot of cousins who are a lot smarter than me who are changing tires at wal-mart because they couldn't handle leaving BFE Ohio. so summary of my advice-
step 1. get into school and get an AS in CS. get foodstamps, pell and WIC. (you pay for others to get these services whether you like it or not)
step 2. get a certification or two. A+, MCSE, CCNA.
step 3. be prepared to move to find work. ESPECIALLY if you plan on finding a job programming.

I've got a AS in CS. I'm not in the field for various reasons but I'm going to go back to school in a year or so to get a BS and if the money is there a masters. I was looking at dice.com the other day and there are a bunch of programming jobs in green bay for senior programmers (3-5 years exp. or BS, MBA, etc.) paying up to 100k even the low end jobs were over 35...
Build your resume while in school.
Join clubs student senate, etc.
My wife did the paralegal prog in 2 years...they're needed everywhere and you can basically double as an adminsitrative assistant anywhere in the country.
Do the cable guy thing the hours suck but the pay is pretty good and you get LOTS of overtime.

I should add that the degree is not really the important part- I got a job for a school district as a network admin with no experience a year ago. Luck plays a part too... don't rule out government jobs either, you can file one general application with your state sometimes as a first step. It's unlikely you'll get anything, but it won't take much time.

Didn't like this blog at all.
The problem with some of the certifications is that they cost quite a bit. And the other problem with school is that it can be totally useless in real life application, which is why some programmers develop their portfolio before finishing school. Competing with some of these folks is like running a race with your leg tied to the neck of a legless giraffe. But at the same time, if you've got some skills and can endure the daily grind, it can be quite challenging. Incidentally that's why most of companies require you to have a BS, masters etc. because they have no idea the quality of work the person brings to the table.
If you want to have real long term employment, try unix/linux system administration. It seems to be a moderately dying breed. Most won't go past the point of simple day to day administration. It's not too difficult but requires more thinking than just point and click. Oh and fast typing skills.
The only problem that you might have is the daily grind of feeding the family while doing all this.

(A) First, get the fuck out of sales. There are actually people who are good at sales and can sell anything to anyone. I hate them; but they're a nessary evil. They talk about sales all the fucking time. Great. And actually it is great that we can hive off this activity to that greedy bunch; if you foist a sales job on a non-salesman-type (like me) it is a soul-destroyer.
(B) Never loathe or blame yourself for not being great at sales; see (A).
(C) Do anything you are interested in. At least it's not sales.
