Electronic Music discussion: Whats a good hardware sequencer?
Store
Written July 01 2009 , Tags: anus, command station, mpc
i need to find a good hardware sequencer because i suck with software. reaktor has been kicking my ass for years now. i've been posting patches i make but they suck. i picked up numerology but it too has been kicking my ass.
so i've decided to quit all software for all time.
anyone selling a mmt-8 for cheap?

what kind of sequencing do you want?
If you want the most awesome everything in one live performance sequencer,
e-mu command station... beware though, its deep. . and lots of menu diving. the manual is longer than the bible.
I've heard the MPC1000 with latest JJOS is formidable
Yamaha RS7000
If you're rich, there is the Genoqs nemo/octopus.
If you can work with single-part sequencing, then record it , then sequence another part, etc... Then you could get something like a doepfer maq16/3 or schaltwerk, or a future retro Orb or something.

Though it seems expensive, Monomachine is the best value for money out there even if you were not going to use the internal synth engine.

ha i just got rid of my mmt8 like 2 mos ago...i wouldn't really recommend one.
they're easy to use, and cheap but plasticy
i didn't really like mine
get an mpc1000 w/ maxed ram and cf card slot
JJOS2 is a MUST
i've got both the mpc1000 and the emu xl7 command station and i have to say that if you want an all in one machine it's a toss up
in terms of pure sequencing their timings are both tight
the xl7 is a synth powerhouse (128 voices 32 arps, fx etc) but menus can be a pain and too many options can get confusing - Biggest drawback: no sampler
the mpc1000 is a powerful sequencer / drum machine / sampler it is basically acid pro or live in a box JJOS2 is a great os and the interface is the best out there for gear IMO (so fast once you get used to it) biggest drawback: haven't found one yet.
both have HUGE manuals but you don't really need the one for the mpc (at least i didn't very much)
IMO the mpc is better but only because i'm only using it as the core of my rig...and the xl7 as a sound module (which it's not ideal for but hey can't say no to 128 voices)

Well, in the interest of maintaining consistency with your XL7 drawback, the biggest drawback of the MPC1000 is no synthesiser.

korg electribes are ok. not very powerful but fast.
i have been getting much joy from the sh101 internal sequencer and some clock sync.

theres usually cheap mmt8's on ebay
if you go for one of those get a black one cos theyre not as old so theyve got the latest os version and the buttons wont be so worn out
mmt8's are a pain to program and you cant change anything while its playing- you cant change patterns with program changes and you have to stop to play the next song
but theyre really simple and straightforward for recording midi from a keyboard or something

yeah the mpc technically has no synth, but if you're good w/ sampling you can basically emulate one by pitching a sound up and down.
the pads on the mpc are 1000 times better than those on the xl7 and on my unit sometimes the xl7 is really quiet which can be frustrating when you're trying to bang out heavy bass. the xl7 would probably be about 100-150$ less if you went to ebay.
