Electronic Music other: pre stfu nerves
Store
Written July 14 2009
Hi everyone, long time no noise
I am pretty excited but nervous - I am going to play my first liveset, which is going to be at STFU Heidleberg in a couple of weeks.
Yeh, good stuff - will be great to hang out and hear all your music.
Someone gave me some advice a couple of years ago, one of yous: You probably won't ever play live, the way you're thinking, so book yourself to play in 6 months' time then you have to do it.
Well, I've kiiiinda done that. I spoke to Filaripops a few weeks ago and sorted it.
My new soundcard arrived a couple of weeks ago so now the latency is low enough for me to use my midi controller. I feel better having keys for composition. I knew I wouldn't really get started til then. Also, I've lost song files or left them on my old hd in Greece [where I lived]...Actually, not the best point from which I could make a liveset happen, I am having to make most of the liveset up as I go along and I'm not a fast enough worker yet. I had no idea, even roughly, what I was going to make, but something is kind of coming together now. It's not necessarily what I want to do for future livesets but it's fine [and a start. I might not even enjoy playing live, who knows].
I tried Live's Session View out for the first time last night and thought, "arrrrrrrrrrgh! well this is going to be AMAZING...", obviously that's sarcasm!!!! I will have to read the manual a bit so I can get things to do things. Something to do with marker points, erm...erm erm erm erm............
Oh, please don't throw rotton vegetables at me. No, better they're rotton, they won't hurt so hard.
What else? Oh going to Berlin after for a few days and will be heading out to Germany a few days before STFU. Also, I have an ear infection still, so you will recognise my liveset by how everything is biased towards the left speaker, that will be me. My stage name should be psuedomonus.
Who's all coming to Heidelberg? I know I'll finally get to meet yoghurtsynth, one of the first people I ever spoke to on here, years back when emchat was.
Had my first proper pre-stfu rush of excitement the other morning :D

Hey there,
Well, here's some advice from a person who has suffered from exactly the same jittersss.... keep focused on your music. Banish the bad thoughts from your brain. Just don't let them in. Keep focused on what you need to get done, and try and focus on putting yourself into the music. If it helps, imagine that you are in your own room, that you have invited some friends over. Or imagine that you are alone...
Actually, regarding the audience, here's some advice I got recently from a friend: the audience WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED! They want a warm relationship with you, and want to hear you do well. So first thing off the bat, make sure to connect to them. It's a bit of a mini relationship, a live performance is. So don't ignore your partner (the audience). But truly, they are there for your music, so after acknowledging them kindly, get into your music and focus completely on it. That's what it is about after all.
Wish I could be there to give you some applause.

relax. relax. relax.
everything will be fine. and even if everything goes wrong, you just play back some files and call it art.
seriously, don't be so hard to yourself. the stuff i know from you is amazing. if the liveset is just 10 percent of that, it will be fine.
try to keep it as simple as possible. even if this involves playing huge loops together with some effects.
so, when are you in heidelberg?
looking forward to this. believe me – everything will be good.
and listen to fredo.

The last time I went on a stage I got nervous and had the runs before. I sat alone in my tent and hyperventalated for a 30 mins beforehand. What a plum! I won't be doing that again. That said, I soon felt fine when I was into it a bit. The shit before the storm. Yeah, if I think of a shitstorm, I'll be along the right lines and feel better. I should bottle this advice, it's sterling. Can you tell I'm still nervous? I'm about 34% less nervous now though, thanks! Phew!

heyyyyyy you!
as you well know i was mega stressed before my first (STFU) public live performance. all i can say is that i am now so glad i did it! it has led me on to some great things ... despite a few bad gigs / moments of self doubt along the way. i still get pretty nervous but increasingly this is morphing from a crippling feeling to an exhilarating one.
i have stopped drinking before gigs (for now anyway) as i found even a couple of pints bends my concentration, making me less happy with the results...
i agree totally with focusing on the music (for now) and that your music is amazing! in the end i hope (like i am starting to now) you will be able to look the audience memebers in the eye and perform for them more. that feels great. but for now i wouldn't hesitate to block them out. also, STFU is the best crowd and they really want you to WIN WIN WIN - as Fredo touched upon.
finally, and oddly...with my recent house move i ended up with a practice room with a wimdow opposing where i practice my liveset. that means at night i can see myself reflected. that helps me to practice and to visualise what other people see - and it isn't half as bad as i thought it was!! - maybe try a mirror?
hope this is of some help. wish i could make it.
i know you will rock it!!! XXX

lol @ shit storm and rotten veg
Great that you're doing it! Having deadlines that other people care about are a fine way to make sure you get stuff done. I think there's some really solid advice here.
"So first thing off the bat, make sure to connect to them."
+100. If you can, have a mic handy to introduce yourself. You might be startled by the weird sound of your voice over the PA, you might sound nervous, that's all ok (its endearing ;) ). Speaking to the people who've come to listen goes a long way towards helping them get behind you.

hit play, bob your head, check e-mail!
eh, seriously, I know the same rush (and especially guilty pressure to practice more) coming on about a week before any gig.. it's all good though, the atmosphere is so relaxed, the pressure's all in your head.. learning to channel it into the right direction is the trick I'm still trying to master heh..

last year at STFU HD, it was really really hard for me to get stressed over my set (although i did practice a bit in the club's private room). the people and the music made time fly so smoothly and my set ended up being 99% fun and 1% stress.
wait till you organize an STFU. there will be plenty of stress then

As Fredo said, audiences are forgiving, especially if they've come to something like a STFU. If you come in wanting to like them, they'll reciprocate.
Also, practice. Get to the point where you can do 90% of your presence with about 50% of your effort - that way you'll be on autopilot and you'll be able to add that extra 10% with only a little effort. That probably made no sense, but just practice. You can do it!

Doing a first liveset and organising the stfu with room's hairbrush up your whoopsee, now that's what i call, Now that's what I call stress 2009!
Ok! I think I've got it now, thanks everyone: Introduce yourself, but don't shit your pants. But if you do, have a hairbrush ready. Distract the audience with mirrors, secretly connecting to them with your music via 'special muscles' [?]. Check your email. Call it art. Win! Smash the place up.
I can handle it!!!
Wow, thanks for the posts doods, I appreciate it. I have to work on my liveset now though. ;)
@ yoghurtsynth - In Heidelberg Thursday - Saturday. You?
Bye for now, busy busy!
