It was with a slight twinge of panic that I realized that I am soon to turn the big 3-0 this labor day. I started worrying about whether I’ve accomplished anything with my life so far.
American society puts such a premium on youth. There are a number of really great young musicians and producers out there who have made me think I’ve wasted my life up to this point. That had I been more dedicated as a youngster I would be further than I am.
Even though I got a relatively late start (I only seriously starting writing music when I was 21), I’d like to think that I have a long-term strategy for being a musician. I think I will be making music for a very long time, hopefully the rest of my life. There’s such a vast field of possibilities to explore. I’m happiest when I’m learning something new about music and applying it, and honestly, I think I’ve only hit the tip of the iceberg.
As part of my committment to learning new things, I have decided to take up the cello. Last Friday I rented a decent one and I’m hopefully starting lessons soon (I already picked out a teacher; we were waiting on the cello). I have loved the sound of the cello and have wanted to take lessons forever. I know it’s going to be an uphill battle, but the sound of the cello fits in very well with what I want to do right now, which is to combine it with shoegaze, distortion and feedback. I also think learning more of the classical repetoire and applying myself is going to help me discipline myself more. We’ll see.
Oh yeah, I also have a new blog up at link . Mostly music for right now. I may cover midget porn, if there is enough demand.

i've been having these moments of "panic" since i was 20.
i'm 25 now and they appear again and again.
i will probably want to die when i'll be 30.
sorry, that was a rather unproductive comment.
all iwanted to say was: i can feel with you. absolutely. and i know the refreshing experience of turning a crisis into something productive.
happy birthday!

Yeah, you're right. I honestly hate that "Jimi/Janis/Kurt all died at 27 and look what they accomplished" train of thought.
I read this article in Wired: link
Basically, it talks about early bloomers and late bloomers in creative pursuits. I think as a culture, we put way too much emphasis on the accomplishments of young people. Let older people have the spotlight too, cause there are a number of people out there who take a long time finding their creative voice.

The 30s are great, guys. Really great. Take that from me, I'm approaching the end of my 30s. There can be discoveries all throughout ones life. Just be honest with yourself as much as possible.

good luck w/the cello. when you get decent at it and can make it sound like a cello let me know. i want cello samples! and it's fun to record strings. keep me posted. i'll have a proper space for recording such instruments in the next month or so
30? i happened to be in japan on my 30th. it was great. x-mas/new years and my b-day all in one trip in as foreign a place as i can imagine for a gringo like myself.
i'm 5.5 years from 40. someone marry me quick! i'm getting tired of doing all the housework by myself and i'd really like someone to help me figure out what's for dinner now and then. ;)

That is because you will be factorable by 2, 4, and 8. That just sucks.
