Hello all. I've nearly finished reading the excellent book Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig. It is a sane and clear look at p2p file sharing, the public domain, fair use and copyright law. It examines how the US congress is being used to protect the vested interests of the few, while at the same time, stifling the creativity of the many. I admit, this is the first book on copyright law that I've ever read, but Lessig is able to present it in clear simple terms. If you have the time, please read it. The more creative people who understand that our cultural tradition of "borrowing" from previous innovators is under threat, and that we are turning into a culture where there is no more public domain, the better.

Eventually, there are so many on the list... But thanks for the prod, sounds great! Lessig can be a real inspiration.

*** Book discussion
is it not fair to say that the Internet is simply an extension of the marketplace? a digital off-shot, a new growth of economy-as-construct?

i, unlike some others, will resist the urge to answer my own question before anyone else has had the chance to ponder it.

cheers!
I'm guessing 'the list' is just his backlog of books he's been meaning to read. Mine is 'the stack'.
that's what i guess at, but i wanted to make certain.
mine is long as well,
i call it "the bookshelf."

i don't know if you want a serious response or not, but i'll assume you do. 'marketplace' is a common metaphor for human behavior. it can be applied to almost anything, and as a model it has its uses. "the marketplace" doesn't exist in reality, only as a way of understanding society.

i don't know what you mean by "economy-as-construct".
it's actually economy-as-a-constructicon i.e. you need all your other parts to become a big badass robot.

essentially i am referring to economy as a kind of construct. sort of, how should i say, A NOUN being a person, place or -thing- but then, what is a thing? so it is such an intangible that i end up mixing words together to get a sort-of-feel for what i am thinking.

and yes, i wanted a serious response, even a non-serious response ... but any which way, i wanted an intelligent response. and i must say i'm quite please to have received it from you first.

cheers,
J
I really can't see how a economic structure can be derived from me downloading dj assault mp3s

i would also recommend to any one here interested in the media to check out "political economy of media" by robert mcchesney. "manufacturing consent" by edward s. herman and noam chomsky is also another great critique of the media. really some eye opening stuff.
