for those of you who want to be stabbed in the night by some crazy person in some foreign country...
No dkarma. it's not that bad. people leave feedback about the person offering the couch and stuff. it's pretty save. i'd say as save as staying in a hostel.
i remember chatting to a girl at a party who was into this.
she pointed out two japanese girls and said they were "couch surfing" at her flat. and went onto explain the set up. she sounded positive about it. the two japanese girls looked tired, worried and confused though. probably because i was using sign language on them to describe my own couch and how large and cosy it was. I did couch surfing. Got one cool dude. and one 40 year old woman who had been r@ ped by her father and needed to share all the screwed up details while trying to fuck every guy that lived there.

usually the promoters/clubs take care of a place to sleep.
at least in europe. never had to take care of that myself, and i have played a loooooooot of gigs. i have this thing where at the gig i look people in the eye whilst talking to them, mentioning various key words to get a reaction.
I analize the reaction data and when i find someone who is: a) not completely stab in the face mental b) not likely to rob me and take all my gear I ask em if its ok to stay. I have only had to do this a couple of times mind you. I do a similar couch surfer thing at my house, so far I have just had academic who decline all my food and only drink water. bryan and i did this when we hit the road last year - can vouch!
