Electronic Music discussion: The Future of EM
Store
Written July 28 2009
In the year 2100,
Electronic music will be created via network.
1s and 0s traveling at the speed of light,
Interconnecting capacitors, transistors, resistors and op-amps.
The network greater than the sum of its nodes.
Do you have a vision?

2010, due to the relatively inexpensive cost of producing electronic music, almost everyone does it.
2015, becuase so much music is being produced, by so many people, there is no consensus among the underground as to what is "cool", therefor the big music business is thriving again pushing out 1-4-5's and ABACABs a plenty.
2020, VVST technology is available, as a cereberal program that allows you to load virtual computers that load virtual instruments.
2025, Richard D James writes "How I Make My Beats" and sells a million copies to 50-somethings burnt out electronic musicians.
The reactions range from "Oh.. Thought so" to "NOW AI M THE ULTIMATE!!". It is the most expensive book ever published due to the lack of paper.. when interviewed by adbusters on the subject james replied "what good are all those trees going to do just standing there"
2100, the last 20th century analog synthesizer stops functioning, The robots from daft punk are at the funeral ceremony and short curcuit themselves, during the seizure they create autechre-style noises (horribly out of fashion by that date) and their careers are destroyed.
2110, The robots from daft punk revive their career one more time.
2150, Korg release the quantumKP and quantum controller series, they are smaller than an atom and actually produce more energy than they use.
2160, the korg quantum control series clump together in super-symetry creating a black hole, which out of desperation is launched out of our solar system.. but collides with jupiter, throwing the orbit out, which then moves mars closer to earth, and a realistic vision of a habitable mars is formed.
2600, The final ruling on whether or not playing with a laptop is in fact live music or not, or if playing with live is live or are you just playing live live. (the vote is undecided).
2601, humanity goes extinct after a venetian snares emulation program makes a song so "sick" that everyone really does get sick and the population is wiped out.
2602, the daft punk robots, immune to the disease set off to explore the galaxy.
2603, they are quickly wiped out by a giant alien force more sick and powerful than you could possibly imagine.

video game music?
"Rock band" actually a rock band, with controllers every bit as musically functional as any other pro midi controller?
Playing smoke on the water with a friend from vietnam?

Generative algorithms will be popularized as ambient music for bus stations, malls, museums and other public spaces.
These algorithms will generate music that is influenced by light levels, temperature, position of the sun and moon, activity level, and any other appropriate input from the environment.

Seeing that Viagra was invented before a cure for cancer, and that all recorded music is electronic at some stage in production, I'm thinking that making fart noises with that pit behind the back of your knees will be less mediocre by then.
My own overly optimistic vision is a distant future were so many people are exposed to music at such an early age that every person is a prodigy by age six, and networks similar to those for multi-player gaming will exist where groups of people simultaneously compose and perform pieces on the fly. They will use microtonal scales, spontaneous time signature changes and each person's contribution will be a counterpoint to the others'.

As occurred with Fermat's last theorem, the aphex beats formula will likely frustrate the most dedicated researchers for centuries to come.
So it is written.

What? That was 2000.
In 2100 humanity has mostly destroyed itself and music consists of unimaginable combinations of what has been passed down verbally and whatever vestiges are found, or mined. Mostly people use traditional instruments from varying cultures, many of which haven't been invented yet, to string together a phrase from here, a phrase from there into naive, but novel post-everything folk tunes. In time, 'hits' begin to spread from camp to camp and without anybody recognizing the significance, everybody's humming that line from Beethoven's 5th again.

Sure, that whole network idea is 2000.
But the glowing BLUE brain router thing? 2100.

Research into nanomaterials yields an exciting new microphone design that mimics the human ear.
The microphone's element is an array of millions of nanotube cilia, each one tuned to a specific frequency.
