I rarely trust the new york times.
I doubt these companies are just going to say "we give up!", plus I still hear kelly clarkson 30 times a day on the radio at work. One day, we will be forced under military martial statutes to purchase 1 casset mix tape from a street vendor every fiscal period.
it's no joke though. The industry is less and less a place where people can make any money. This is very bad news for musicians, folks. Very bad news.
Is it bad news or, is it an ultimate opportunity?
what's the ultimate opportunity? Can you explain a little bit more?
are commercials/movies/tv/licensing the new music industry? good luck breaking into the jingle market.. it's harder than getting into the NBA.
i think there's always gonna be a market for touring bands. who knows.. perhaps satellite radio's billion channels will lead to a channel for everything and royalties can be garnered that way but then everyone will have to pay for a satellite radio device and subscription.. sort of like internet radio but w/better coverage for your car, boat, plane etc.. i think the jury is still out on the death of the music industry. if anything it will become more regional and artists will have a harder time getting national exposure but may be "big in belgium" or something. you never know. there was a guy who came into the studio i worked at who was from canada and his market was taiwan and taipei. he was huge there. he made like earthy progressive over arranged "throw in every instrument you can think of" world music. so, maybe it's just the death of the majors/mainstream and the passionate people will have to figure out how to survive and everyone will have to have a day job or sell their favorite song to a pharmaceutical company to use in an advert. um physical record sales are not "the industry"
Chuck M. Blow here sounds like a mouthpiece for the RIAA IMO. OH NOES the industry is failing because huge record companies aren't selling as many cds. SHIT SOMEONE CALL THE WAAAAAHHHMBULANCE!!!! WAAAAHHHH OOOOO WAAAHHHHH OOOOO Quick someone get in contact with mobys cousin. I bet he can jumpstart the indus-toobz. well, I suppose I'm just feeling it pretty powerfully because I'm signed with a label. Not a major one, mind you. But distribution usually goes through some major label (mine goes through Warners). So let's put it this way: this is bad news for anyone who is signed to a label.
IMO, most of the labels think in an old-fashioned and non-innovative way, have a set of gears that is very much built to fit in the old standard industry machine... Obviously music is going to keep getting made because that's what musicians do. And there definitely is money in syncs. But it's a very confusing time. Exciting as well. I dunno.. I was being kind of sarcastic I suppose Fredo.
I have a feeling that this whole capitalist architecture is realising a fate similar everywhere due to their own "House of Cards" reasons. ultimate opportunity = find a way other than money in order to run things and establish merit in the world. Are we doomed guise?? distribution is a mess. so many distributors of all sizes have closed up shop in recent years.
These developments are bad for those who depend on the existing music industry structures for their livelihoods, but this seems to me like pulling a rotten tooth.
I'm optimistic about the potential for technology to facilitate liberty at a greater pace than it facilitates control (heirarchical power structures, archism, monopolies etc). man.. as soon as i saw the pic and read the name i wished i was reading this on the onion
@Fredo: When I started reading the article, it was with the same kind of sadness and fear you expressed. But then when the writer used Madonna as an example, my sympathy evaporated, and was replaced with schadenfreude.
@dkarma: Does anyone have a smapple of a "wahmbulance"? I would love to actually hear one. Fodder for the next mixit, perhaps? maybe it is just time for a reassessment of the business model? honestly, there are DIY punk record labels that have been getting along without distribution from a major label for years (dischord records comes to mind).
