VJ's are boring. AWFULLY BORING. The audience standing there staring at the wall like mindless zombies. Looping video clips merged together with the same old color burn, color dodge, additive blends. Just video any old shit out the side window of your car and add some blend effect. Add some of those symmetric kaleidoscope effects. Boring.
I work all day with digital TV, developing and debugging mpeg decoders. Many of the bugs produce more interesting visuals than vjs. the latest vj i saw, with a flashy laptop and resolume and a graphics tablet and pen, was way more boring than a circuit bent nintendo
Please. I want you to take control of my visual sense, in all directions. What's with this drawing the same old computer-blended video clips in a shitty rectangle on the wall. Give me VISION. Give me 3d glasses or x-ray specs. Point the projector in my face. Give me an all-encompassing, earth-shattering hallucinogenic experience or get the fuck off the stage

About me
I enjoy building gear as much as I like playing with it. I havn't been creating music for very long, so don't be too hard on my tracks. I dislike the use of computers, and welcome a more hands on approach. Most of my music grows from live improvisational noise. Constructive critism is of course warmly welcomed.
My Gear
The studio consists of several cassette decks, shortwave radios, vinyl players, diy synths, minidisc machines and modified/circuit bent toys. I sometimes use a computer for multitrack recording and effects. Recently, I've enjoyed building some weird MIDI controllers.

i have tried before to find some info on him but failed.......but let me tell you (sonny jim), the VJ we saw on the Murcof was nothing short of amazing. lots of live contraptions being filmed and mashed up live....made the whole show amazing and was (for me) even better than murcof and his string trio...

when I first looked into visual stuff. . I thought it would be like synthesis, rather than.. literally like DJing.. where you mix a number of video clips together... I was not impressed it's like that with everything humans make: only 10% is interesting. and your task is to find those 10% in between all that crap. and that search is what makes life interesting.
For the most part I'd agree, but I also appreciate the huge amount of effort involved in filming or creating custom/interactive video (interactive as in tightly knit with the sound).
I mean, as impressive this is Video it's still not much more than a jumped up visualisation effect, is it? That guy's Radiohead video with the generative sphere's created in Processing is pretty amazing though. Mapping is the future! Or at least a current fad. Even if much of the mapping I've seen is little more than geometry upon the immediate environment, it's still more fun to watch than random footage. if that could work in realtime-synthesis of visuals onto surfaces of video..then be mixing bits and pieces of different video/surfaces/mapping together ...now that would be getting pretty crazy! I like reactable for its visual qualities. that's a combination of live performing dj, artist and vj that is kinda nice. also projecting onto semi transparent screens, with multiple projections, to give a 3d layer effect, thats kinda cool

Like performing electronic music, there are interesting and stupid ways to vj. If you take the easy route with anything, it's boring. There are lots of visual systems that let the vj interact with the music in surprising ways - drawing systems like yellowtail or superDraw: link . Most people aren't that adventurous though. um, so why dont you do all that and stop complaining?

he's right....the art is painfully un-entertaining right now....there needs to be someone to show folks how it's done... when I vjed something once, I just triggered a bunch of horror movie/cartoon/kung fu/monster truck clips...
