Electronic Music discussion: 4 old computers: what to do with them?
Store Written November 06 2009
Hey, so, ive got 4 oldish computers with varying degrees of workage up in here... now my question to the peoples: what should i use them for? the computers are in the range of 500-900 mhz and 128-400 or so megs of ram. about 10-30gig harddrives...

gimme some fun and or creative ideas that dont involve turning them into fishtanks or modern art sculptures.

Are you a gamer? We call those "starcraft" machines in my group of friends.
are you into programming or scientific computing? they could be useful for learning how to set up a cluster or a PVM. that's not even closely related to music but i bet someone who is artsy and smart enough could think of an artistic use for this.
breakscience, you are my new best friend.

psyingo: set up a cluster and run a starcraft server.
already set up a starcraft server with 2 of them and 2 laptops.
want something music related.
maybe some linux audio workstations?
opl synth station?
Holy crap, thats cool. I wonder how many people here play starcraft.
BNET PARTY
Donate them to the less fortunate....

.

bwahahah just kidding those losers don't get nothin'
starcraft yes.
You could add wireless + big HDs and use them as wireless file servers.

Or configure them as web servers. Or spam bots. Or a Doom 2 network.

Buzz runs well on machines of that era. MIDIoverLAN is a utility that'll let you send MIDI data over a LAN (hence the name). I don't know how well Buzz syncs, though. I'm sure other uses can be found using MIDIoverLAN.

If you've got PCI slots, you could install Win98 + buy a Korg Oasys PCI.

That's all I can think of atm.
Psyingo said: "opl synth station?"

you read my mind.
I was going to suggest MidiOverLan too. It works a treat, you could easily run a vst host and a couple decent synths on each machine.
omg installing SC now. :D
Okay but no broodwars aight. I seriously suck at the expansion. If I can't SCV rush I have no chance.

Pretty please!!!!

PS. huk huk
In all seriousness, I owe my career to SC. I leaned all I know about web design because of ripping off Clan Forsaken.

I received my first C&D from those fuckers when I was 13!
I play so much Starcraft it's not even funny.

And yes, use those computers to host LAN parties for Starcraft. That would be their best use.
