i got my new macbook pro today to replace my stolen 1 year old g4 powerbook.
its pretty slick. because cubase won't run on a macintel, i got a copy of xp pro and installed it today. it took *three* attempts. on the first attempt, i was prompted for the product key during installation. my academic copy of xp pro has the key printed on the actual CD, so i was unable to eject it and had to reboot back into osx in the middle of the install. on my second attempt (after writing the key down on a piece of paper), windows recognized there was an interuption during the first install and picked up where it left off.
apparently it missed a few steps because after the install, it wouldn't let me log in. back in boot camp, i deleted the windows partition and started again. third times a charm - installed without incident.
really, it was my fault. but the installer did screw up on the second try.
as a mac user for the last 6 or 7 years, just let me indulge in a bit of windows bashing. holy crap, it is weak. i guess i've been taking osx for granted for so long but wow, after a few hours back in windows and i'm driven mad. really, its hard to take. i guess i'm just not used to it, but it seems less well thought out, less well designed, less intuitive.
that said, the world of pc-only vsts will open up to me, which is pretty cool.

i installed flyakiteosx which makes me feel a little better. its probably a major performance reducer. i guess i'll find out when i start doing audio stuff...
its only temporary, as mentioned, cubase sx 4 should be out within the next six months or so as a universal binary.
but there is some handy windows only software that i can use at work.

it would be cool if they had a winVST host rack for Mac OS, then I think I'd make the switch (if i had the money for the hardware too of course)

be very careful with flyakiteosx on the mbp - i had to reinstall my windows partition because of an error I had with it. it's a bit of a performance hog as well and does some stuff that imo is very un-osx-like (that taskbar thing). it's a great idea though, in vista it may work a lot more smoothly though.

Its a trade off, and its really a question of personality.
If you run windows, you will have problems pretty regulalry after a fresh install. But you will slowly work out and fix each one of those problems. Then, you will know how to fix windows problems. You'll know how windows 'thinks,' etc. Using windows will force you to become educated on how to use it. OSX is so deliberately designed to be so user friendly and seldom break- its a beautiful thing. But all OS's will screw up, and when OSX does, you've got no experience fixing it!
lol!
PS I totally hate them both.
