I was just browsing around youtube, looking at videos for korg's padcontrol, when I came across this little gem.
Here is a description on music thing. link
And how un-2006 of me if I didn't post a youtube video as well.;-)
Looks like it is open source and apps are still being programmed for it. I wonder if there are any controllers being programmed for it to control microtonic for the moneme?
Kind of pricy with a $500 price tag, but HOT!
Any one have this in their studio yet?

I have one and am currently preparing a liveset centered around it, also helping writing a blurb for a magazine about it. I'll post more info later, just got up

ok, back from breakfast!
I got the monome 40h about two weeks ago, shipping from Philly to Germany only took 3 days! first off, the construction: the videos don't convey the smoothness of the buttons or the rubber base the aluminium plate sits on.. it's gorgeous and can be played held in hand or sitting firmly on the table.
software - it's using a max/msp patch (using the free max/msp runtime) or a little serialIO driver to hook up to the computer, looks complicated on their website but is really quite easy.
if you're on a mac the monome uses a very nice OSC to MIDI mapping software called "mapd" that allows you to map various kinds of widgets to the buttons, like switching patches, virtual sliders etc (a bit like the Lemur config software). these widgets can send midi messages on an internal midi port, making it a breeze to control ableton live or what have you (and of course, also microtonic running in any host). here's a pic of the mapd patch for ableton live I'm working on.. top row basically switches the other 7x8 buttons between various presets, so you have a total of 8 x 7 x 8 buttons to map - definitely not running out of buttons anytime soon! ( link )
The problem with this method is that you do not have a MIDI backchannel in mapd - this means that the LED behaviour is either "trigger" or "toggle", but will not respond to changes in the software you're controlling (which really is what makes it look so cool in the video above). it is likely that they'll add that functionality in a future mapd version, but it's also possible to make a max/msp patch running in parallel that does it for you. for windows users there's a bunch of max/msp patches with a functionality similar to mapd, but not quite as convenient I'm afraid.
the max/msp patches that are available are great. of course there's mlr ( link ), which is great for chopping up samples and can be used for entire livesets, but other apps that are great include 64step, a sophisticated sequencer ( link ) and flip ( link ) - there's many more patches, some for sending patterns to various external midi devices and of course more basic stuff like chromatic midi note functionality, triggering loops via the various buttons etc. it definitely has rejuvenated my interest in max/msp and 3 years after the last class I took on it I'm back into learning it because of the monome - you can come up with so many possible uses for the little box it's not even funny.
sorry for rambling on, but it's a pretty inspiring device i was very hesitant to spend this much money on a controller after having been disappointed by various devices, but I'm glad I got it. will hopefully share some videos from my first live gig with it soon.

Thanks for the feedback, filarion. I've been considering getting monome for about a week or so. Hopefully they won't run out by the time I raise the cash to buy one. I agree, it is a great and inspiring little box.

Thank you so much for your feedback on the monome. I'm seriously considering getting one now, but I have zero experience with MAX/MSP, so that has me apprehensive

it is dope. you don't have to have a working knowlege of max/msp to run it, their max patches cover a fairly wide range of possible control setups (and people post different custom ones to their website). I was playing with settting loop points on the fly and storing pattern changes (like recycle).
Its just a beautifully simple interface and would work great for live stuff.

w00t w00t, I finally got a liveset prepared using the 40h which arrived a couple of weeks ago. working pretty well, I'll post a blog here shortly showing a successful liveset. I'm using mlr rewired to Live for effect processing...though, sadly, there's only 3 buses even though in mlr you have 4 buses to work with. So I usually bounce my bass to the drum track but it makes it difficult for when I wanna distort the drums without having my bass go haywire...I'm learning a lot just by trying to mix in real time.
