Electronic Music discussion: bad reviews
Store Written September 28 2010 , Tags: crap, bad, shity
i've just read a bad review for an album i have done with my band.

to be honest i don't really care what other people think, especially reviewers. but the review did manage to play on my obvious inadequacies as a singer. something i find almost funny as i'll be the first to admit , i aint a great singer, but i'm singing in a band.

it has shook my up a bit, how do people take bad reviews? i want to hear some re-assuring revenge stories.

sorry to hear that man.

Ice-T had some wisdom regarding bad reviews:

"I got problems with the press
Caught the punk in traffic, stabbed the sucker in his neck
Punk reporter tried to diss me
Now the muthafucka's history."
yes killing is the best solution for incompetent reviewers...that sounds logical.
Once got a bad review from a trendy uk magazine, it was annoying as they seemed to have listened to the album with dofferent ears to anyone else - a Fanzine writier, in particular, gave a glowing review which seemed to know where it was coming from.

It's always going to be hard to take, cos you will always know the imperfections on your album and be prone to criticism.
I've also had a glowing review, in another band, from Club International magazine.
It happens mate. Shrug it off and keep moving forward. Perhaps the particular reviewer ALWAYS writes negative reviews. It's easy to do if you're not a musician or performer or perhaps he/she was passed your CD and doesn't really support the genre you are in. I've had reviews written where it is obvious the reviewer didn't really listen to the CD, maybe skimmed the tracks, wrote some fluff to fill the quota. If it were me, i would just move on, even concentrate on the negative criticism to overcome such obstacles that were mentioned.
@Analog... Clun International? As in the skin mag? That's golden.
@pppeck the very same!

they had words? i never noticed....
I got a review from Byron Coley that rubbed me wrong.. called me a window washer and compared me to the group B.E.F. Was a bit sour about it... but then I finally heard B.E.F. And especially liked the track that sound like mine... So I don't really care anymore...

His reviews are a bit nerdy and starnge so ... maybe it wasn't bad??
keep doing shit, it doesn't really matter!!
if you are really doing something interesting and are trying to push the envelope, it seems that bad reviews would be the first indication that you should keep doing what you are doing.
NO YOU FOOL!
this is a rare oppertunity to gleam that oh-so rare "VALUABLE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM".
look for relative logical (relative) sound statements and LEARN!

if you can't find any, then bra's just h8'n, and his criticism is invalid.

I used to get my feelings hurt, but now criticism makes me stronger than any fluffly emotionally encouraging words. if you are truely driven, a compliment means only that you need to find pickier critiques!
