Electronic Music studio: Reactable releases "Reactable Mobile" for iDevic
Store
Written October 04 2010 , Tags: Reactable, iPad, app, iPhone, iPod
This was a pleasant surprise. I had no idea it was in the works, but it's a blast to work with, and only $10!
I'm sure you're all familiar with the Reactable product, but for the uninitiated:

and here's footage of the app:

the thing about idevice apps is there's no way to download a preview unless the dev makes a lite version. i've read conflicting things. is it buggy? is it useful? can you run more than 3 components at a time?

Yeah. The other thing is that we've been spoiled by the absurdly low prices for apps. If this came out for the DS, it'd be $40, easy. You just have to read the reviews, and take the big, scawy $10 plunge!!
In answer to your questions:
Buggy? I haven't found any yet, but I just got it yesterday.
Useful? It really depends on how you work; what your direction is. For me, it's useful.
I've had 6-7 components running w/ no problem on an iPad 64gb. Smooth.
On an iPhone 3GS, it can get a little sluggish, but maybe a reboot before using would facilitate better performance.
If you have an iPad, I recommend it.

I dont have an iPad but my mate just brought his into work. So weI bought the app...
We're just annoying everyone in the office now, its great fun.
I have to say I'm impressed with how intuitive the interface is to get into, also the sound quality is really good.
If I had an iPad, I would buy it straight away...now I just need to buy an iPad.

looked great, was about to get it then a friend messaged me: "Gave Reactable a good bash on the iPad yesterday, not sold at all. The interface is unintuitive as fuck and there's a specific set of modules that you can use in one instrument. How is it better than that modular synth you already had on your iPhone?"
meaning jasuto. which is mandatory for anyone on here with a touch/phone/pad (and less than half the price)

apparently it also has a 2 oscillator max, compared to jasuto's apparently limitless amount of modules per patch.
i'm yet to try Reactable, but i'm thinking of spending the $13 on Hexatone instead.

strange... I found it easy to get into. granted I only played with it for 30 mins but got the hang of it.
I find it hard to fathom why $10 seems too much...its great fun. Alright there may be limitations (ie 2 osc max) but its $10?!
I dont own any iProducts so maybe I'm getting carried away with the touch screen thing...I have no idea what jasuto or hexatone are (i'll look them up).

"Limitless" is an illusion that only deceives folks who haven't put these apps through their paces. Try getting 4 oscillators going with a few loops simultaneously.... Good luck! Your iDevice will run like a pig.

hmm most of my patches i've made in jasuto involve about 6-10 oscillators. some of those are modulating lfos etc. all in all usually 20+ modules. running a 3GS, solid as a rock.

I'm running it on my iPhone 3G... pretty solid but it craps out if I put too much on the table. And by too much I mean 3-4 oscs and a looper/sampler. Is it worth $10? I suppose. Intuitive? Sure, watch the demos and you're on your way but out of the gate I found it rather intuitive. They key is to import your own loops, as the stock ones are crap. I think its better on the iPad because this gui doesn't leave you much room at all to tweak volume etc., that's perhaps my biggest complaint. Would I buy it again? Sure.
