Electronic Music discussion: press / distribution - ideas?
Store Written October 16 2010
so i've been working on press for this (em411 alum) he can jog cassette/digital release my label put out (http://hecanjoglp.bandcamp.com/album/songbook), and i'm realizing it's completely different for EM than it is for other types of records. i've got a press release together and have been sending it out to a handful of folks, but i'm at a bit of a loss for ideas on other avenues or blogs to hit up.
has anyone here done a mini-press campaign for an EM release lately (especially one in a less-common format, like cassette)? any ideas or discussion of how to go about this in a more focused way would be a big help.

i don't really have any experience in this personally, but the last time I saw a big cassette release it was by afta-1.

for the most part it looks like he went the common route of blog hyping.
i think putting youtube playlists together with similar artists is a good route to generate attention. just some ideas.

would your target market appreciate the lo-fi format? the nostalgia? afta-1 seems to have had that going for him.

there's always the walking around the street selling, going to record stores, etc. route
yep already hitting up our regular stores, and the cassettes come with a high quality download, so it's best of both worlds.
Maybe try Vital Weekly or Wire, depending on wierdness level.
in terms of press, find electronic djs at college radio stations and get the release into their hands.
@ kidgamma - thanks for the linke to Afta-1 “Form” Album .... good stuff for inspiration!
also, there are moonlighting graphics design people who are / were em411 peeps also.
i got an album cover (bought) that is shelved, but so awesome, the music just didn't match it.
just started plunking on the keys again....after 5 years.
i got turned down a lot. even dating someone whose aunt works for "fill-in-blank" records was
not enough. even though it's physical media (cassette tape), the tie-in to WWW media-kit would be
useful. any kind of strange esoteric puzzle-game to tie concepts/imagery to sound/genre

on the higher end of marketing a product online, if you haven't seen it, consider the impact of:
d-9.com - on the launch of the movie district 9
game + trailer + ???
i'm not saying everything HAS TO BE marketed and over the top, but that it helps to consider
what parts work, don't and what is affordable/appropriate to gleen from it =)
good luck, and good night...
crap. 2x post, sorry. the flash-based (i know, i know) game is media-rich and cross-platform..
didn't really think about it but today it seems to work on Ubuntu 10.10 Out-of-Box. no installations extra!
i hate to say positives about bloatware. damn. but in case other Nix users out there...ah..erf.
