Electronic Music discussion: schizobeat ::: genre-free electronic party music
Store Written January 23 2011 , Tags: theory, lofi, dj mixes, experimental
i recently made a mixtape (even though i'm not actually a dj) which is meant to represent a style i call "schizobeat". i wanted to post a bit of the intention behind it here in case anyone has any thoughts about or is interested in such an approach in general.

the mix is on soundcloud here ::: link

i like shit where there's a ton of switchups. it keeps people on their toes and tests their ability to adapt to a bunch of changes, while keeping it all still within the realm of electronic "party music"--stuff inspired by and/or experimenting with shit you can get down to at a proper party.

a lot of this particular mix is definitely lo-fi, some of the tracks could for sure be produced & mixed better for soundsystems (and certainly i could have mixed it better were i actually a dj), but it generally reflects the way i feel about mixing shit up, genre-wise. i feel like the schizo approach encourages variety and precludes a scene from becoming super stagnant, as it does when it's based on only one particular vibe or style, for ex: all dubstep, all hardcore, all breakcore, all electro... you get the idea. if a style (of mixes, of parties, etc) is cultivated which can include ANY type of electronic party music, the whole thing is wide open, and creativity will flourish.......

This approach sounds totally valid to me. But then again, I don’t listen with a clubbers mindset. Still, I’d hope the changing rhythms would prompt more interesting dancing.
dj set pacing/design is really based on crowd psycology more than anything.

the effects of songs/mixes/tempos depends on many variables...
