Samski, if u wanna start making money doing this...
don't worry about experimental business models, i would start by shaving off the creepy beard. ;) also... i listened to that band Pomplamoose.
the emotional impact was akin to choking on phlegm. but i wish them all the best in this crowded global-web-jungle-media bazaar Yeah, for sure! I am not endorsing anything, just thought it was an interesting article. I guess if my "day job", to subsidise my music making (not an issue during my sabbatical), was making stupid youtube mashups that wouldn't be too bad...
I didn't / still don't know much about ways of making money from viral stuff. As I said, Fredo should be a millionaire by rights. BUT he isn't, which probably suggests you still have to produce wank to make money. Anyways, onwards with the beardy wierdness!! youtube and making money is about big numbers. Nobody seen the south park episode with viral kids?
But isn't Fredo making music that is legitimately compelling on its own? That tends not to entice people.
To be honest, I love watching the videos those Antwan Dodson guys make. But its because of the source material they start with, not because its strong musically. Fant00m: for sure!
Nick: Yes, Fredo sounds compelling but his video work is also amazing IMHO, and adds a lot. In my world that would go viral. Oh and I'm in no way saying the Antwan Dodson guys make anything musically strong. I can't stand their stuff to be honest. I guess all I was surprised about was that anyone was making money out of stuff like this. I assumed it was for fun and no other reward. Silly me, it seems i miss Fredo's eyebrows.
i can't see why somebody would want to do something boring and trite as the examples mentioned there. i mean come on cover songs? wow that's quite an artistic statement.
no offense meant to you sam. i just don't see the point.
and i miss freods eyebrows too. luckily enough there's facebook
No offence taken. I agree. I posted it partly for the reaction and partly because I was surprised that the videos that everyone passes around actually make the people behind them some dollar. Odd world. Even odderer without Fredo's eyebrows!
errrm...hi, I'm 12 and who is Fredo?

Objects said: "errrm...hi, I'm 12 and who is Fredo?" Fredo used to be a regular here. And he had quite a set of eyebrows. And did shoot some amazing video with beautiful music. link Some eyebrows, indeed!
...very nice music/video as well.

just like to point out that this "new model" asserted in the article is essentially the same model the radio industry ( and later, tv... Bandstand, MTV, etc.) has been using for at least 70 years. Also, playing cover tunes to appeal to an audience while slowly inserting your own material worked for the Beatles, the Stones, Elvis, Hendrix, Led Zep, Parliament, Van Halen, Metallica, the Sex Pistols, Hall & Oates, Radiohead, Duran Duran etc. etc. (you get the idea.) In that respect, these new groups are on the right path. However, some of their assertions that this is totally new are silly and ill-informed. Yes, it is a new medium, the middleman doesn't get as much of a cut, and you can get results much quicker - but making money from advertising is not fundamentally new to the industry in any respect.
