Electronic Music discussion: Ethernet Midi Sync
Store Written June 18 2011
Hi folks,
I'm looking at the program IPmidi which seems to offer windows/mac ethernet midi communications. Basically I'd like to sync Live running on a Windows 7 laptop (lenovo x200tablet) to a mbp running Digital Performer.
I understand that midi sync is tricky with Ableton, but I've seen some mention that midi time code may work a bit better.
Anybody have any experience with ethernet or wireless midi sync, and getting it to work with this program? Any pointers to freeware?

not much noise after this posting.
after a day of tinkiner with networks etc. i've made zero progress. ipmidi shows up as a midi port, but no communication across my wireless network. will next look into a hub and ethernet.
have been trying to tame midi timecode sync across two computers with limited success. Finding random delays between the two computers that offsets fix, but after pressing stop and restarting the master, the offset changes value and must be adjusted for again.
sort of defeating the purpose.

it's surprising: sync is still somewhat unobtainable.
Have zeroed in on the problem. Sending midi timecode out of a macbookpro running dp6 via MOTU usb interface into a windows 7 machine via Edirol midi interface and ableton. . .

ableton is a 1/8th note delayed.
i'd just get a master midi clock and sync everything to that, old school style. i've experimented with this stuff before and there are always major latency issues.
Yeah, ethernet sync is tricky. The best results I ever had were from a remote VST host. That's not going to work in this situation, though.

I'd work with MIDI hardware if at all possible. There should be a latency compensation setting in digital performer somewhere to solve that delay.
Made some progress with help from friends and happenstance.
Downloaded Bonjour and this on the PC:

Turns out apple has network midi built into the O.S.! Pretty neat and bodes well for all that ipad shtuff.
And hey, just a few days ago Ableton released a new beta that improves midi sync.
Am now able to sync via ethernet from the mac to the pc running ableton by using midi timecode.

Things that did not work for me:
IPmidi
Netgear switch (introduced instability in the ethernet connection)
Midiclock

I did try old fashioned midi signal from one usb interface to another. Not stable enough leading to unpredictable unpredictability.

So I've found a solution that works. But am struck by how much work it took.
