Massive massive props, the genre is kickflippin ass 80s movie theme to the max. Musical elements hinting of all the masters of the era, Wendy Carlos, Jean Michel Jarre, Giorgio Moroder. I'm just glad someone else appreciates this kind of music as much as I do.
well produced/recorded/mixed.. i know this genre has made a recentish come back from the 70s and 80s but i find it hard to get excited about it. it's very musical and well done but just sounds so dated. the sounds are just so obvious or something.. all those arpeggios and melodies just scream 80's sci-fi B-movie.. it's an exercise in re-creation to me. a tribute or something. but it's obvious by listening to it that you guys had fun doing it. that comes across in the music.
i bet you'll sell all 500 copies of the record... in Brooklyn ;) ignatius said: "...it's very musical and well done but just sounds so dated. the sounds are just so obvious or something.. all those arpeggios and melodies just scream 80's sci-fi B-movie.. " I've been experimenting with the 1978-1982 era sound trying to give it a modern vibe by working with a modern approach to the drum sound and bass lines, adding in some pumping and such. I feel like during that era technology changed so rapidly to digital, like from 1981 or so to 1985 that theres still a lot of ground for exploration left untapped. Like the jump in technology changed the sound quickly, and during this time artists seemed to be re-inventing their sound more for the sake of technology than anything else. I'm not saying its a bad thing, but like for example the difference from Yellow Magic Orchestras, 1979 Solid State Survivor to 1983 Naughty Boys is massive, (both albums are A+ imho). I can understand the need for artists to innovate, yet that 1978-81 sound didn't have to be scrapped completely. I feel like these days I have the opportunity to pick and pull from different eras without as much regard for fitting into a specific genre, and being able to have the music fit into a club kind of gig and still feel right, with the vibe and everything. Like with an artist like Dam-Funk, he took an 80s sound and made it his own, developing things. I don't mean to get too deep here, but this kind of genre experimentation was one of the reasons why I built my analog modular, and started on vocals to begin with. So I've thought about this thing quite a bit. I mean I could have taken a different approach in my evolution of music as an artist. I could have been all about glitch or super sped up IDM drum madness, but it came to a point to where its like, I'd listen and think, heres another noise track with nothing to say lyrically, mechanical and cold. I wanted to find music that took me to a different place, away from the constant hell that I wake up to everyday. Something that was melodic, something that spoke to me. If it was based around 4 on the floor so be it. I discovered artists like Lime and it was like a breath of fresh air despite it being 30 year old music. Maby I have a case of "musicians ears" so I have less of a problem getting past whether a track has modern production or not to enjoy it. Like if a track doesn't have fly sliced samples or side chained sub compression I'll think of it like "oh it just doesn't have such and such effect, the reverb is just turned off" but still get the core of the thing musically. So its great when I see an artist take some influence from that era and use it to express their art, their life really, cause I feel the same. I like to think I get it, and I'd like to think that this musical direction I started following might be the right track for me the more I discover other "new" (as in modern) artists and releases expressing the same ideas through their music that I've been feeling deep within myself for a while. djugel: check out College on Valerie Collective if you haven't already, same thing with Dam-Funk. Jeez this is a long post, I didn't mean to hijack the thread. It's just been a while since I've talked about music with anyone I guess. @chrisallen - i'm all for people doing whatever gets them out of bed in the morning. whatever they have fun doing etc.. make the music you want to make. follow your art where it takes you. that's all anyone can do. when people try to force it to sound a certain way it just doesn't sound authentic.. and i'm not implying that's the case here. it sounds sincere and as i said.. you can hear the fun they had making it.. that comes across.
I'm not all about modern everything or mechanical this or that or IDM chopped glitch drums etc. i dislike most modern trends like wobbles, side chaining everything, etc. i just like to hear to new sounds or composition that is left field and a little out there or whatever and i don't really get that from music like this. i wasn't really into this kind of stuff when it was new. here or there something would stick in my ear but the early electronic music i like is more in the morton subotnik style of weirdness. Silver Apples of the Moon etc. it's just a matter of taste i guess. and i'm glad you replied. this place is dead. an actual discussion is probably welcome to the other 8 visitors who come here per week. Really enjoyed it... great synths. Yeah its an obvious nod to the past but I hear something in the production that makes it more than that. The track 'murder by phone' for example just has something modern about it, dunno... it just feels 'loud' and is much more aggressive than something from the 80's...
I guess I'm a sucker for analogue synths and I make no excuse for it. I also like songs that have a melody and are not just experimental for the sake of it, but like Ignatius said... its just a matter of taste. @ignatius. yeah this place is dying .. if we want it to survive (I do) we all need to chip in, post some tracks - and blogs that are not just promos. I'm not much of a blogger I'm quiet by nature but I will continue to post my stuff here on a regular basis until it all goes tits up! back On topic. @djugel...thanks for sharing it, I loved it. fuck?! I might even buy a track! I don't post around here much these days but i must say, I LOVE this release. Thanks Djugel. 'Murder by Phone' is like a lost John Carpenter theme. Love it.
