Electronic Music discussion: Hackintoshing it
Store Written September 10 2011
So, I'm running on a white macbook that I bought back in late 2008. It still runs great and I really don't have any issues with it other than the fact that it has zero graphic/video capability. Lately, I've been thinking about building either a hackintosh or finding a hackintosh compatible PC laptop. I know the latter is more difficult than the former since all the components don't always work, though there are a handful of laptops that work great for this. I think I'll probably wait it out until this coming winter when prices fall for the holidays and I have more time to tinker with it.

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone here has attempted to install OS X on a PC and if/what kind of problems you dealt with?

Here are a couple of links that may be helpful if you're looking to do the same.

I ran into alot of problems with firewire - it would only recognise the firewire card if it was in the 3rd pci slot - (the one i had a wireless card in, which no longer worked in the other pci slots) - be careful with software update too - after I got the firewire working, an automatic update borked it again

so if you have a firewire external sound card - do your researches - you'd probably be best getting a motherboard with onboard firewire - but those are a rare beast in the pc world these days. it seems firewire and wifi are the most problematic things

Otherwise it was relatively painless on a gigabyte ep45 UD3L. If i had the monies i'd just fork out for the real deal
yah, i'm a lil' nervous about the firewire side of things. i actually just ordered a laptop and hoping that i won't run into any issues. i'll need to get an express card for firewire...just crossing my fingers that it won't be more of a headache than it's worth.
Is the old Macbook really that slow at this point? I know that 2008 was about 50 computer years ago, but I've had pretty good success using old Macs.
i've a late 2008 macbook that's great (2.1ghz core 2 duo). i'm at the end of my applecare and i'd like to make some money with it. i really don't wanna throw the cash out for a new apple and i'm also a lil' disillusioned with apple. i love osx, i just don't feel like throwing out loads of cash.

i'd also kinda like a dedicated graphics cards. nothing fancy...just for the handful of games i have on steam from when i had a gaming pc and for the occasional video edit.

i'm following this guide for the computer i'm getting.

I don't blame you for being disillusioned with Apple, though my beef with them centers mostly around the extreme restrictiveness of iOS.

Also, the term "hackintosh" is absolutely hilarious!
