Electronic Music discussion: cassette storage ideas
Store
Written September 11 2011 , Tags: cassette, storage
Hey.
I am looking for ideas how to store/organise a large amount of cassettes.
My 4track tapes are getting out of hand.
anyone seen/use any interesting storage methods?
at the moment im using boxes and make-shift shelving options.
also, anyone clued up on optimum conditions for storing tapes?
in fact... any interesting tape-related linkage would float my boat.

i have mine in a $2 pressed paper drawer set from IKEA. cassettes fit nicely in the drawer when placed vertically, so the labels on the boxes are visible when you take out the drawer. each drawer fits about 20 cassettes, so each drawer could be a category / genre / artist etc.
i wouldn't call the IKEA thing "optimum", but cassette tapes will most probably deteriorate anyway (that's part of the fun!), so i never cared much about 'safe' storage.

I found these at a local store for about $7 a piece: link It's a decent sized plastic box with a gasket on it, so it creates a near air tight seal. I have about 7 of them, and they can store all my electronics, cables, computer parts, important documents, etc.
I also bought a bunch of silica gel with indicator beads in it from eBay and made my own little silica gel pouches to take all the moisture out of the air in those gasket boxes.
So far it seems to work well with all of my electronics. It works for other water sensitive items, such as paper. With tapes I would think the most important thing is to avoid dust, and the gasket boxes work perfectly for that.

Here's a picture of my storage solution in "the studio" (apartment - I have only one room, this is it, plus a bed and a fridge and a bathroom)
link
I put all the boxes in a cheap screw it yourself bookcase laid down on its side.

delete, IKEA.. of course! i will wander up there when i get funds.
eyesnine ive got boxes like those... i think need something with shelves, compartments.
i tend to record a bunch of shit then leave it for a while before mixing down. as a result ive got dozens of tapes that need to be listened to for possible goodies...so i need something where i can line all the tapes up nice and orderly.
i should just build some fucking shelves basically.

I like Bali Shag! It's the best I can get around here. The red can is the best one, imo.

lol just kidding. i just don't like halfzware.
as far as cassette storage, i alternate leaving them in the freezer and direct sunlight. obviously i aim to achieve different results than you monty so I'm probably not qualified to make a legitimate comment here
