Electronic Music discussion: On Mixits

For a summary, skip to the end.

I recently met up with mulletballet in real life. It was good to sit and talk about music and synths and moving and life and stuff. We met mostly to talk about the Mixit, and where it is heading. I am sure he feels similarly, but I'd like to state my case for the mixit, ask some questions, and get a little feedback from all of you on what to do here.

So the mixits have done a lot for me. I've been in some rather dark times, and the mixits gave me a place where I could count on creativity and a forum to express myself through music during those times. The sense of community that I got from the mixits was great. I knew people would listen to my tracks, and I would get feedback on my mixes and the music. In short, the mixits have been the best thing for me as a musician, period. I am in debt to the mixits, and all the people who participated over the years.

We just finished Mixit 99. I remember the first one. That is crazy. We shouldn't let this die. I'm willing to work on it, and mulletballet has unlimited storage and bandwidth to throw at it. I think there are a few things that need to be decided first, though. This is were I'd love to hear from you, the faithful EM411'ers.

I would love to see EM411 host the mixit again. It was at its prime during that time, and I think it integrated well with the community. As I remember, the reasons for it not being hosted here were bandwidth and storage costs, as well as a bit of administration. If we provide bandwidth, storage, and administration, I'm sure something can be reached as a compromise. The site admin would have to allow us to do this, however. If you think it would work well here again, I'm perfectly willing to do the admin work, mulletballet is willing to offer bandwidth and storage, and we'd have to convince the admin to allow this. We'd need to convince him that this will work. This may require some amount of petition. I think this is the best option, but again, we are at mercy of the admin.

The other option is to move the mixits to a permanent solution, with its own site, and its own CMS. There are a lot of things that can be built for this purpose, but it will take time, work, and participation. If we do end up moving it to a new site, this will mean new usernames/passwords, which I think may be a part of this problem as well. It occurs to me at this point that the only way to make this work without EM411 would be to compete with EM411, and that is not something I'm particularly keen on doing. At the risk of having my account suspended or banned here, I would do that if that meant keeping the mixit going.

Now, regardless of which option we go with, I'd like to know what you, the mixit artists, want from it. I know that people have talked about rating systems, prizes, winners, and more. This, I think, is the most important part of this all. We want the community behind the mixit to really push it. The best parts of the mixit are people giving real feedback about what the songs are doing, and the people uploading the songs learning from that. This is something I cannot afford to have die off.

So, a summary:

1. Can we get mixits back here? What do we have to do for that?
2. If we can't, where do we want it?
3. What can we do better once we find a permanent home for it?

What do you think? I really truly want to know.

Your pal,
Leo.

Em411 seems like such a ghost town now. It's sad.

Frankly I think that integrating mixit into this site is kind of a no-brainer. Mixit is something that's always encapsulated the spirit of Em411 in my mind. I'm against the ratings and prizes element. That would take away something. Something nebulous but real. Never once have I witnessed any kind of competitiveness or shit talking. We couldn't joke about "winning" the mixit, if you actually could.

Honestly I wonder if things will ever be the same around here.. There was a sizable group of very special folks checking this site every day for a good while, and there's no way we can ensure that will happen again.

BUT... putting mixit back on the front page would be a statement of some kind. "this is the zen of electronic music that we stand for" yadada ydadad *insert fart bass here.

Perhaps it would inspire a new generation of nerdy yet artistic wondering souls.
can we get it back here? probably not much of a chance of that happening. i thought you and mullet were gon work on a site :/

I mean, there's already a site -- it's just not very accessible. i'll read the rest when i don't have to get ready for work (skipped to the summary) and give my thoughts.
You are right. I plan on working on a site. My hope is we could get enough people to rally and convince the admin (Bogdan?) to bring them back here. If we can't, then I'll build a site elsewhere for the mixit.

Also, for 100, I think we should do something a little different. Maybe have the last ten mixits worth of samples. Or maybe do some kind of cover thing or something. Just a thought.
I haven't looked at this site in ages, but mixits were the only reason I did. Bring em back! I haven't done one for like 5 years or more.
yeah mixits should be on here.
wish i had more time to do mixits and music in general these days... like you, mixits were what gave me the confidence to make music, and as an exercise it's a great way to experiment and 'complete' something. i think my first one was mixit 14.

i'd love to see it come back here, but i suspect a new place will have to be built...
I suspect the same. Still, I think we should attempt to get it back here. After all, it won't cost the admin anything aside from a little time. And if we're allowed to manage it, not even that.
I would like it to be on this site. my log on over at the mixit site keeps disappearing. Mixits get me to sit and write full tracks instead of the loops i usually shit out
Hi again, guys. I feel the same way about mixits, really good memories. I admit that when it moved to the forum and only like 3 ppl were doing it, it didn't have the same magic. Totally +1 for the idea of hosting here if em would allow it.

Nice user interface is key for any kind of new site.

Actually, I'd love it if it worked through Dropbox or somethng similar. it was just there, on my drive
I just sent a message along to the admin about this. Hopefully we'll hear back, and we can do something. One thing: How would you all feel about some google ads if it meant Mixits could be here?

fine by me!
something need to be did about the spam though! ugg boots are soooo 4 years ago
this would be really awesome for mixit 100
Mixits didn't kill em411, it was the forums tables being dropped that was like the final "fck you please go somewhere else" from the admin.

I know you guys want to rewind history, but it just can't be done.

Two gallons of ice cream and a gallon of sht is 3 gallons of sht.
Well, I've still not heard back from the site admin. I'm hoping to soon. Otherwise, I think some type of CMS will have to be used for a new site. I've looked into Wordpress and a little into Joomla. Any advice there?
