Electronic Music discussion: streaming compression on soundcloud & bandcamp
Store Written May 29 2012 , Tags: compression, bit rates, mp3s, sound
i've been having some recurring issues with the way that soundcloud & bandcamp process the files i upload. they convert them to 128kbps mp3s for the streaming, and that almost always causes weird volume fluctuations and distortion for my tracks when they are streamed. i'm not entirely sure why because it seems pretty rare to come across on those sites.

i usually export my files as 96kHz 24 bit wavs to upload to bandcamp, since they want the highest quality original files. i am guessing there's an issue with the sample rate conversion to mp3, since going from 96kHz a 48000 rate mp3 is the even breakdown as opposed to 44.1kHz which is probably more commonly used. but i'm sure i'm not the only one who uploads those quality files. i've done some experimenting with soundcloud and lower sample rates and it still seems to happen every so often.

anyway i've never been able to find a completely detailed explanation of this sort of thing. anyone happen to know or have experience with this situation? can someone explain or link me to something that really directly addresses this issue?

thanks!!!

lol, just upload a 44.1kHz i guess. But hey I've heard about you! my friend johan and also the 'tlr guy' was in your band. Cool to see ya on EM411.
o cool, yea they are friends of mine ^ ^ as for the sitch at hand, i'm kinda looking for some sound / compression theory and other people's experience if possible. also i do want to upload the high qual files to bandcamp, so people can DL that if they want. it ultimately doesn't really matter too much if the streaming is a little wack.
I'd recommend dropping 70 or so bucks on a top level software resampler. Convert your files to 88.2 or 44.1.

Also, unless you're making music for video files that run with a 48 kHz rate, I'd suggest making all of your recordings in 88.2. It's just a matter of dropping every other sample to get to the standard redbook rate of 44.1. It's arguably the best sample rate anyhow, if you buy into what Dan Lavry says. He's written about this subject on gearslutz.
Check out this link on 24/192 Music Downloads and why they make no sense. On this recent link Dan Lavry writes about the optimal sample rate for quality audio.
wow thank you ocp, that kind of stuff is EXACTLY what i needed! very enlightening.

i always produce in 96khz because there's definitely a noticeable richness at that rate that isn't present in 44.1 .. but also the only reason i don't use 88.2 is because Reason 3.0 refuses to operate at the 88.2 rate when using ASIO4ALL. It just switches to no sound or drops it to 44.1. But i can still export in 88.2, so i think i am going to try that and see how it goes.. also i'll probably end up replacing the files of what i have up in 96khz at bandcamp & soundcloud, because i've noticed even when people download the lossless which sounds perfect, if they put it in a DJ mix and then convert that to a 44.1 mp3, i can tell there are unwanted sound variations in my track (probably mainly noticeable to me but who knows).

thank yoU!!
I've noticed this happens with 24-bit uploads on BC. The stream gets the odd glitch in it, which thankfully isn't present on the downloads (which are pristine, as you'd expect). 16-bit uploads don't seem to exhibit this weirdness.
I would advice against using Reason to resample. It'll do a pretty lousy job.

In your case, it might just be best to keep 96 khz source recordings and resample once at the end. Or get a new interface that used a different driver. I have no trouble running Reason 3 at 88.2.

I agree though that the sound quality is noticeably worse at 44.1. I expected the difference to be much more subtle than it is.
