I am not sure if there are apps out there that'll 1)format an Akai Floppy 2) write an Akai-format sample onto the floppy AND 3) run on windows XP.
I'm pretty sure the Akai s950 sample format is not .WAV but I could be wrong. My Akai S2000 could import .wav via the MESA software, but this was a software translation issue, I couldn't load up wave's off a PC floppy onto the sampler itself.
Screw the computer. Just record sounds via the analog input. ANALOG INPUT. if you wanted a softsampler, you bought the wrong device!
Get used to bouncing through the menu's. You'll have your favroite 5 or 6 at your ifngertips in no-time! Transferring samples from the interweb, over MIDI, sucks.
Most akai format samples are on CDRoms... and not really meant for the s950
MAKE YOU OWN SAMPLES!!!
To the library! To the kitchen! To your amplifier!

hmm ,... my s900 doesn't need a disc.. It just turns on and there's a sine wave called TONE. That disc might have been an OS upgrade or something.
That thing is confusing until you figure out how to make your first program. Then it's really easy.

I believe the S2000, which came after the S3000 actually, was the first to support WAV import. The S950 will, of course format HD floppies, but if you want to read them in a desktop PC, according to this link you have to reprogram the floppy drive itself. Might as well drop the idea of digital transfer since the S950 doesn't support MIDI Standard Sample Dump either.

Im gonna get some real hostility for saying this but since you only paid £60 I would sell that s950 and get a Yamaha SU10 for maybe even cheaper ( I know now I am gonna get it tight from some people but I used and luvvved a full-spec s950 for yeeeeears but boy...is the sample time shit and saving stuff a yawner all for that 12 bit wee length sample). If 12 bit a must 'maybe' get an old EMU cos they have a 12 bit sample reduction choice much longer sample time and ZIP disk saving option

I use to have one 10y ago. I dont think so you need a boot disk.
the interal memory is volatile so you need to reload all sample after a reoot.
it is very simple. you cant load wave. there is couple apps to convert Wav to akai format but more for S1000. not much for s950.
the way I was sampling : I did connect the digital out of my CDrom from my PC direct to the s950 digital in and sample in digital.
it is simpler to sample using the line in. it does the job. love the triger start display
you need to create a program from your samples and assign sample to note(s) and specified the pitch. you can play 2 samples at the time on the same note if needed.
you can also set 2 samples to response to different velocity. and finaly, set the output. 1->8
I have tone of Diskette from my old days (sp950 format)
that is about it.

race4prize - forget my point about the Yamaha SU10 (its good but only as a phrase sampler/or/1 octave semitone sampler, whereas s950 is multiple octaves) but would still highly recommend the EMU.

Yes, the emu right the way up to ultras have bit rate convertion. They can also sample rate convert up to 200KHz. I have an e5k ultra, but I still wouldn't kick an akai s950 out; They make great drum-machines.
