kwyj - island
Release
Author: kwyj on December 11 2006
--> This is another live recording from a fake plastic loops rehearsal (using one an ipod with one of those TuneTalk line in thingies). This time instead of just jamming and coming up with three hours of random stuff we practiced doing the same thing over and over until we got 10 mins or so of repeatable random stuff.

Fake Plastic Loops is Jim on keyboards and vocals, Becky on saxaphone+flute, and me on the Ableton'd computer. We just start off with a drum loop or two and everything else is recorded & looped as we go along.

This rehearsal was the first time I used my BCR2000 in anger and it worked great. I only have to touch the computer now when I need to delete a duff loop.

This is all in preparation for a possible gig in January which was safe and far away when I agreed to it but is now scarily close.

It goes on a bit this one - actually I'll be happy if one day we manage to trim it down to half its current size. Thanks for listening, even to just a small part!

i love it when the sax comes along, i'd like some more dynamics and faster action though - but the track is great for what it is - also the break is a nice touch.

it needs bass

really looking forward hearing more of this.

I dug this quite a bit. I agree on boosting the bass on this. Not sure if you need to speed things up too much though as you might loose out on the laid back aspects of it. I guess it depends on the venue. If people were doing this in a chill environment I think it would be cool as hell to have a beer and chat with that going on. (Yeah I listened to all of it but I was working on a project plan

I like this, but yes it does go on a bit too long. Also I agree with the call for more bass.
Probably a personal taste thing, but I'm just not keen on the 'no man is an island' singing. I don't like the way it's 'phrased', or the tune, or even the vocal timbre (sorry Jim!).
I'd like to hear the percussive bits a little more 'up front' too. Not a lot, just a bit. Mind you, I am listening at somewhat of a low-ish volume, so it might be fine.
That said, I really do like it - I just have a hard time with vocals sometimes.

great sax playing

needs a bit of mixing, but cool.

Thanks for the comments everyone - I agree with all of them to some degree. I find the main problem is thinking about getting the mix right at the same time as thinking about recording and looping the incoming audio. Using the BCR2000 has made things much much easier, but I guess I do just need to be aware of the fact that it's easy for the bass and drums to get lost a bit, and for the whole thing to drag at times.

I think I'm going to ask Santa for a live bass player this year .
