Release

--> Here's another live recording from one of our laptop looping rehearsals. We start with the drum samples, and record everything else on the fly. Recently we've been practicing on Wednesday nights, which is great for sampling well spoken people debating serious issues on BBC Radio 4.

I've been having a bit of a problem on the live mixing front. Basically, I'm trying to record and loop Jim (vocals/keys) and Becky (flute/sax) on the fly while trying to mix at the same time.

In this effort I'm trying to use live's compressors on the inputs to even out the sound, and I'm also compressing the main channel in live to (unsuccessfully) stop everything clipping. Sadly the main mix compression tends to cut everything out when the bass comes in (you can hear this clearly when the bass is laying over the radio sample later on).

We tried this song again without the compressors and you can hear how that sounded here:

(although the radio sample didn't work out as well on that one, but things get quite interesting at the end).

I really need to figure out some good ways of evening out the mix - if anyone has any tips that would be great but remember it's all got to be done live.

Sadly after practicing this song for a while we tried to have a go at our other one (island - see previous release) and it all went horribly wrong. Maybe now we need to focus on switching between songs.

Cheers,

kwyj.

Another keeper. Keep it up, sounds great.

this is a really cool idea, definetly keep at it

wow. political and good beats. the picture makes me want to kill things.
ahhh. real instrument sounds. refreshing and lovely (alto?) ... sax?
i'm so glad Blair like US. lotu (lots of throw up)

Thanks for the comments everyone! It wasn't meant to be political - that's just what was on the radio when we started off, although having a sample on a subject that most people have an opinion about works very well (if you listen to the second effort then you can see how it sounds with a completely different radio recording). We're trying to keep each tune down to the 7 minute mark so there's not lots of time to wait until someone says something cool.

And it is an alto sax too - good spot!

neat song.

you just might have to lower all your levels live before they get to the computer. you'll get it.
