well, this is my first release on here...cos I just realised what em411 is really all about.
i wrote this tune just over a year ago, mostly bedside, as my grandad was dying. he died a year ago yesterday. i have always liked this tune but have never known whether to share it - not least because it has a nasty sample of my grandad in it at the end.
i guess it's a good sign that i have decided to put it on here! hope you like it, or take something from it.
ooh, and don't hesitate to criticise it because of what i just outlined. i want mixing tips, mastering tips and whatnot from you lot please.

i tried to give this a go but it literally hurts my ears. control those highs. it's unlistenable as is.

edit: thoroughly enjoyed this. i dont know shit about mixing, personally, but im sure someone here will let u know - i thought the sample at the end really added. this song, as a whole, as music though, very nice and expressive methought

where'd you get the strings from? they're nice.
the beat itself is spot on, and the modulations were applied well, although they sounded like the typical glitch vst bag o' tricks.. which are basically all from 'windowlicker'.. but still, very cool.
shit.. that sample at the end. damn.
well.. he's been released from this world, and he's one with the universe.. that's the only thing we can all look forward to for certain!
and btw, the part at the beginning is great.. it's kind of like his body malfunctioning or something... very foreboding.

monkvolcano: you are correct in your thinking on the drums. a sampled beat, through glitch, resampled, chopped, effected and rebuilt. not a very romantic process and certainly a bit old hat the sting sample is a cropped, bent and effected nord sample sound, which i found online sometime and liked.
lunatinker: i made another (piano only) tune that was played at the funeral. i also did a speech/poem, was all a bit overwhelming 
i am glad i got around to airing this and i thank you again for your kind comments. where's PAWEL? hasn't he got something insensitive to say on the matter?? heheh.

The high pitched noise and the strings (processed or not) make for a very moody intro, a little painful too.
Then the drums come in, and they are all happy.
I think there needs to be some sort of transition, just having the drums jump in while the strings are going is a bit distriacting, imo.
Maybe have the strings drop out for awhile, as the drums fade in?
Or consider replacing the drums altogether? Make them less funky dancing robot drums and perhaps process them to be rhythmic, but not glitch-happy drum machiney?
Hearing the end of the track, well, all the other elements of this song fit together well, sound good, and are very emotional. My only gripe is the beats.

dig what you're saying mlbot. i struggle to leave drums out sometimes. dunno why. i like tunes that have no drums, or maybe some other rhythmical sounds like boxes being hit and stuff - but i often seem to put pretty straight drums in...*shrugs*

i know what you mean, leaving out drums IS hard.
But Its my opinion that for this piece of music, you gotta try.
If you have that rhythm as a midi file, transfer that track over to a sampler/drum sampler and start loading up found-sounds or sound effects instead of drum sounds?? Its not the fact that there's a rhythm that seems out of place to me, its the sounds.
