well, this is my first release on here...cos I just realised what em411 is really all about.
i wrote this tune just over a year ago, mostly bedside, as my grandad was dying. he died a year ago yesterday. i have always liked this tune but have never known whether to share it - not least because it has a nasty sample of my grandad in it at the end.
i guess it's a good sign that i have decided to put it on here! hope you like it, or take something from it.
ooh, and don't hesitate to criticise it because of what i just outlined. i want mixing tips, mastering tips and whatnot from you lot please.
big ups, sam.

mixedtape: thanks man, am really glad i shared it. have been sitting on it for a long time but i feel good now it is out there...!
mlbot: unfortunately, the drums are all sampled and chopped etc. i can play drums (a bit) and i have a midi kit...so i might try a new version sometime...ta for your thoughts.

i didn't need drums at all.
i wanted those strings to keep developing. they broke my heart at first, but then the track started dancing, which allowed me some emotional distance. the reverby drum hits are ok
oh man. the sample at the end hurts. this must have been cathartic for you to do. one of the first things i released here was a very bitter elegy for my mom, so i sympathize

hey astroid. digging the lack of drums vibe. i can't explain why i made it like i did. it just came out that way at the time. like i said, somehow i find it hard sometimes to make tunes without drums. stupid really. it was indeed most cathartic. quite unbelievable to see him fall from grace like that...but making this helped to get me through it. props to you for posting something so personal too. hope it felt good too. ooh, by the way, love that madass devil tune of yours. the production is tip fucking top. i kiss your feet

This song is great.
I completely agree with what others have already said. Mlbot was right on. I do like the big resonating drum hits though.
The sample of your grandpa is really powerful. I don't like the delay effect you have on it though. I bet you could find an algorythm that fits it into a more precise space in the mix.

i dunno i get what mlbot's on about but i really, really love the drum work. I don't think the track needs to exclude funk to achieve the emotion, or vice versa. in fact the contrast to me is ultimately more rewarding and would be much more likely to bring me back to the track, to sort through the layers.
the sample is awful and beautiful, what an ending...

brilliant.
I dont know if it needed the drums though, don't get me wrong they're nicely done, but they kinda get in the way of what your doing so beautifully with the strings. bold move with the sample at the end, I couldn't have dealt with that had it been me.

I love grandparents...I had an awesome grandmother on my mother's side and a crazy rich swinger granddad on my dad's side...I love family!
p.s. my granddad had wind up penises, vaginas, and pickled penises in a jar on his mantel...good man...I saw my first naked lady from his large Playboy collection...I still wear some of his clothes. My best collared shirts are his.

the jury is out on the drums then...! might try an alternative mix sometime.
thanks for all your kind words. it's been a pleasure to me that people seem to have liked this. my tunes never normally make it out to a wider audience. might try popping something else on here somtime...
zfigz: i too love grandparents (and family)...although my grandma has been struggling to stay pleasant to be with over the last year but what can anyone expect - she'll be cool again soon. my grandad taught me so much. one of the best things he taught me is that material possessions are just that and if shit happens to them, so long as no-one gets hurt, life goes on. simple to say, not always easy to do but now when this happens I just think of what grandad would say and it's all good. can't wear any of his clothes though cos he was much shorter and rounder than me
