race4prize//dance dance revolution
Release
-->
h'ok. since splittin up with my long term girlf, i've been doing a lot of partying. bad eh? anyway, it has opened my ears to a lot more dance music that i would never have listened to. so i thought, well, i'll have a crack at making a dance tune. now this is the first piece of dance music i have ever written, it sort of house speed but i wouldn't really call it house....hmm maybe electro house...i dunno. anyway, any specialists like to give me advice i'd be most grateful.
form is so important to dance music obviously, as is the build ups etc etc, i know this tune needs a lot of work but just tell me where! i have some friends playing a night at the fridge in brixton on friday and if i could get them to play out a tune of mine i would shit myself.
cheers.
x
oh and ps. this was mixed on in ear headphones (i'm at work) so fuck knows what it'll sound like through monitors....apologies for that!

The first generic section is stinky. The second, more electro bit is nice, but that cheese pad's been in the "fridge" since 1997 and it's gone all mouldy.

lolll cheese pad.
the apeal in making "dance" music is that it can be done pretty quickly...
how often can you finish a track so quickly?!

I think the kick's'll be too punchy for club PAs. Also, be sure to not crank up any COmpressors. Overcompressed drums have no life on a good PA, just noise. Sounds fun, tho.

hahah I like how that pic is all "ELBOWS TRUCKIN BITCHES!!!"
real strong bassline.
if it were me, Id treat the strings or something, makem more in the bckground or make em more electro.
oH SHIT STROOONG bassline/chorus!
I need some sidechain compression and a FAT kick.
I like those electro hats that just came in, wish there was something like that at the begining.
DON'T FIGHT THE FEELING, GET YOUR GODDAMN HANDS IN THE AIR AND MAKE THIS A HARDCORE DANCE TUNE!!!!!
I've done got me a CRUSH on that bassline!!!
HEY HEY!! let me remix this! send me the parts to johnverchot AT NOSPAM gmail.com if you don't mind.PLEASE!!! I reaaaaly want to make this "better" (IMHO of course), I just want to do a thing with it.
IN SUMMERY: just make it a little edgier. listen to some benassi brothers, daft punik to get some buildup structure ideas. dance music is less about layers of sound and more about overt cool sounds. I like your substance ALOT, but as a dance track this is lacking, HOWEVER as a dancy idm track this is REALLY GREAT!

loose the sitar, drop the kicks to 134 on the breakdown, after that, you got to shuffle the bass and the kicks a bit. it's got no funk. drop off the lowest frequencies in the bass line and boost the mids a bit - it has far too much rrrrumble. a good electro tune needs space, whether it's "nulektro" or not.
personally i'd try to make the whole thing more atonal.

omg - you broke j_chot. i think he just had a dozen good ideas - and that's why people keep showing up here! love it.
its a template you made r4P - like something you could use for a longer mix.
you could randomly add flamenco or horns, or funk bits here and there...extended mix...

the sitar no workee too well, lose that. The track needs to really break out, it sounds a bit confined, the percussion needs to slam in hard and not be timid, to match that bass line which is monster. It's well on the way though, just crunch it right up. keep at it, cos as PAWEL said making dance music is more fun.

i could possibly see the sitar working... i feel like it really wants to have a really long, complex decay. maybe some really nice stereo reverb w/ a trailing tape echo. maybe a more stereo, less clinical sounding source sample but, one thing's for sure: the sitar definitely wants to be more "stereo-sounding" and swirly and psychedelic. it's one of the first sounds you hear, so it should be more magical and pull you in. perhaps give a listen to the complex backgrounds of those harthouse trance tracks from the 90's if you feel like doing some research.
