My name is Johnathan J. Stegeman/MidiMacMan, and I am a composer, web master, photographer, graphic artist, and freelance writer from Denver, Colorado.

I am have been playing the piano since age five, and while I have had no classical or "formal" piano training, my self taught technique has been shaped mostly by ear, and my love for improvisational styles mixed in with fundamental theories about chord structures and harmonies.

I have faced great criticism for my approach to piano playing, and the music I create. And you know what I have to say about that:

Any attention is better than none, so all those who have something to say:

I love YOU!!!

Some people stand in the darkness, some people put on my blue suede shoes and that's just the way it is.
Thanks momsazombie!

not going anywhere musically?
Who isn't? You aren't Sprouts? Who can really be the judge of such a thing? Certainly your opinion is that which you are entitled, but is there such a formula for what really makes music, or any artform a credible piece of work?

Now try and comment about something that is both supported, and credible. You may even learn something if you put some actual time into your critique, now wouldn't that be a pleasant surprise?

I think so.

Here's my critique midimacman. stfu. You are an ass and apparently have no desire to take part in this community that offers friendly advice and truthful musical critiques. You don't listen therefore we don't listen. Open your ears and your mind and stop being a dumbass.
Here is an honest and thoughtful critique, but it contains the same things you've heard before.
It seems to me that you've figured out or decided to sync your piano to your drums....which is a good thing! Hooray for progress!
It seems, also that you are still trapped in GM Sounds-land, which is a place filled with cardboard McDonalds (meaning we've heard it before and it still sounds bad/cheap/amature to me)...so, that being said to improve this song, develop a sound a little more uniquely you and a little less guy-playing-the-piano-in-the-mall.
I told him he sounded midi and he never forgave me!!!!
look generalmidimacdood, if you want more respect and possibly even more thoroughly developed comments about your music, maybe spending some time here at em411 doing more than just coming around when it's time for your latest release that sounds mighty similar to the previous release which sounds like the previous which sounds like the previous, etc.

be involved in the forums, post a blog that isn't a not-so-veiled swipe at everyone that doesn't agree with your sound, your music, or whatever. give back to the site a little and make your visits here less about YOU all the time.

people do tell you what they think of your songs, but you don't want to hear it. if what is said is not to your liking then you bitch, so why should anyone bother to post about it anyway?
i kind of like the percussion......well, compared to the rest.
gm sounds from garageband? you can use this to change sounds:

I think you should all chill out and stop being so precious about your EM principles and community. This site's here to be used by whoever wants to use it in whatever way they find useful. This guy's a character and his music may not sit comfortably with your progressive musical beard stroking but he's obviously put work into this and it's got a naive sunny charm.
ya i'm gonna go ahead and agree with momsazombie on this track. it's got a sweet strawberry chocolate licking charm to it. and i like that...

*strokes beard*

that said, i think if mmm were more open to suggestion, and criticism, and was less defensive about his music and technique he would get more out of this site. well, i shouldn't talk about him like he's not reading this... mmm, u are talented. this song is cheezy and i'm stopping it now. have fun. ^_^ good melodies tho

ok i didn't stop it, i'm intrigued... if u pump up the drums (replace the individual hits with hits more interesting, or layer them with hits more interesting) and add a groovy bassline this song'd be ace. good work buddy ^5
meatspin dot com is a classic site. I'm going to meatspin some people right now.

I'd work on the melody. A cheesy MIDI piano version of Clair de Lune or Greensleeves can make grown men tear up -- why is that? It's because there's soul and emotion in the melody.

I feel that there's too much emphasis on getting interesting timbres here, and not enough on making good music.
I agree... the melody is fairly complex, which is a nice change of pace from the "three notes over and over again" trick you tend to hear on the radio (cough... Coldplay... cough). The reason that Coldplay is popular, though, is because there's something emotionally moving about those three notes. That, and Coldplay has well-paid producers and a fat budget.

A good next step might to be to tighten up the song structure and work in some sounds besides the piano. (Incidentally, that's what I've been trying to do to improve on my last release, so I understand that it can be tricky). Also, maybe find a certain feeling that you want to convey through the song... the track is soothing and some of the piano work is nice, but overall it feels a little bit like elevator muzak.

Incidentally, I'm friends with one of the founders of meatspin.com. He's a little quirky, but he's a very nice guy. He's studying psychology, which I guess makes sense considering the strange appeal of the site.
P.S. Er, that might've come off as nasty, which I didn't intend. There's definitely some good stuff here, but it could use some work; that's all.
