--> Ello ello.

Well, i was working on my liveset and found this old tune of mine lurking on my hard-drive. as i haven't posted much music on here for a while - due partly to work, partly to spending time on a few collab projects and partly to sorting my liveset - i heard it and thouhgt i'd put it up, to see what people make of it.

i used to make tunes more in this vein - i.e. with lots of changes and shifts. is that a good thing or not? one thing is for sure, my production skills have got better...but i am never convinced my tunes are as interesting as this old stuff.................or is it just way too much....?

excuse the tin whistle playing

hope someone enjoys listening.

i enjoyed this.

yo dude! i really enjoyed this. i think the flute and drums didn't work as well as I had hoped together, but each on it's own was very beautiful and cool. It wasn't that the instruments didn't work together, i just think more time spent on the eq or something might help them coexist. But that's just my ears prolly.

I can hear lots of fun stuff playing along that flute, some classical guitar...perhaps more synth play. the drums, especially in the beginning were tight. sounded like you put some love into them and it payed off. nice work.

What Joey says above - felt the flute was a little harsh/too proud in the mix and could do with some sweet eq to make it more cohesive with the other bits. Thats all just taste though.

My only complaint though would be that I wanted it to hit that dirty section again. it happens once and rawks but I wanted it to reappear and rip it up before that lush, harmonical ending.

Yea, this song is a dandy.

Despite a raw sound, the mix is actually nice and spacious. The flute song writing is fantastic. I agree with mixedtape and Zanf about the eq. But this is really a lovely composition from start to finish. If you still have the source files, I think it would be worth revisiting now that you have a much increased knowledge of production.

I think your last release "Anal" is just as interesting by the way.

nice, nice! thanks everyone for your words. i totally agree that the EQing needs some attention...to help integrate the 'flute' more. It's actually a tin whistle by the way.....a lot cheaper than a flute

zanf: having listened again, i think i would've liked the dirty section again towards the end. hmmmm...

nick: i think i will revisit this...if i still have the work files - oh, and thanks for your words about "Anal"

thanks again for your comments!

Hi

dirty section - could inject groove a liiittle biit more (?). Yeah, you can't just put that dirty section in once, that's not fair.

Others may disagree - but I was thinking that the bassline sounds perhaps quite loud in proportion to the bass kick, or perhaps needs some eq.

ps - I've still got our mixits from July on my mp3 player and though underdeveloped, yours sounds pretty interesting, nice mood I thought

Cheers Jetsom. Yeah, needs some work - if i've still got the work files ;)

Re: mixits - i really struggle with them to be honest. mainly because i always want to play new stuff over them. that is how i make tunes normally, lots of playing instruments / singing etc...and i find it hard when that option is removed

Yesh, I can hear that (wanting to play stuff. I tried to force myself to work only in matrix edit at some point, just to see - helped that I didn't have a keyboard or a mic then). It's an inspiring challenge being limited like that though too, huh. Expand your skillbase & remind yourself to experiment with different techniques (all in the safety of the mixit living room ). You made some piece of kit for that mixit, didn't you?

'You're not harking quick enough' I haven't heard anyone else say 'hark' for years.
ahaha - yep yep. that's a cool sample, from a BBC thing they did on uk accents where are you from Jetsom?

in terms of mixits, that's exactly how i treat it. the problem is i am never really happy with the end result...although i am happy with what i learn! i did indeed make a reaktor instrument thingy for mixit 57 and for 56 (i think) i used my traktor scratch to do a live mix - using the samples looping on the two deskc - i didn't post anything in the end cos I didn't get around to rounding it off. anyway........all good.

Nice! I liked this a lot. I agree with Zanf about the harsh part...I feel like there may even be 2 songs worth of ideas here.

yep, i think you are right about that mister mechp ta for your comments.

What, you didn't post your mixit? That's not in the sprit of mixit apparently :S. I discovered this when I nearly didn't post my first mixit.

Yeah, perhaps agree with mechp, there are lots of ideas in here, like they come easy for you, perhaps 2 songs' worth. I'm trying to restrict myself to few elements & squeeze them, and avoid the add add add temptation. (similarly) It usually reveals a lot, but I don't get much in the way of finished music. I dare say you just have to grit your teeth go through that seemingly unproductive period ('if it were easy it wouldn't be any good now, would it?' and all) and actually realise that that's the fun part anyway.

yep yep yep - hear ya! that mixit was very very rough and ready...will do similar again some other time - as was an interesting approach

*can't get that link you sent me to work at all

i'm a sucker for anything that resembles mellotrons or flutes and stuff. agree about the eq'ing part though. still everything is spaced out well and not muddy. that's the problem i usually have - mud mud mud. noice!

yeah man, I didn't use EQ or compression on anything until about 6 months ago. just used panning to place sounds. haha - seems silly looking back. I find that sometimes stuff I do seems to go muddy for no real reason. there must be a reason....just doesn't seem that way
