Electronic Music 411 - Digital Love

You have the level of the sounds set quite low in the beginning, and then you drop a kick in there that seems WAY loud, then you drop in some more sounds that are matched up with the kick volume and it all sounds natural. So the initial volume of the first sound would appear to be too low.. and perhaps make the rest of your track seem to loud.

Maybe play with the wet/dry mix of the reverb.. that may also help.

If what your after is an implied sense of quiet. .you can still match the volumes, but thin the sound out with an eq. Take away some of the bottom and it'll give it that feeling that it is quieter without sacrificing the volume of it.

As I listen to it I see how this part fits into the mix as a whole.. so I'd just bring the volume of it up a bit at the beginning then set it back down again. That way the bass drop isn't so abrupt and then the rest of the track doesn't seem quite so loud, and the listener gets a sense of the volume of the song.

so I think you're saying... that the clinky bells part that starts the track off is too low? and that I should do a high pass filter or something on the bells part so that it sounds thinner to match with the rest of it?

Yes. just bring the volume of the bells up in the beginning.. but leave the reverb volume the same. Then duck the bells back down when the other instruments drop in because I feel it fits well in that mix.

I would say it's fine ... just need a pinch of treble on the first kick/drums.

Love the 2nd part. Maybe the bells could come up.. but maybe do your high pass idea when you turn them up. .. oh .. and that other knocky kick that comes in later is nice where it is.
