| StoreTags: erik satie, dave brubeck, together
-->
this is what happened when i sliced up two of my favorite songs EVER (Erik Satie's "Gymnopedie" and the drums from Dave Brubeck's "Take 5") and put them together as something new.
sadly, it is unfinished and my old comp it was on is dead. some day soon, i will rewrite it from scratch and maybe add a quiet gentle trombone in the second verse, or maybe something else, or maybe nothing. suggestions?

the piano line seems kind of hurried at times - just the velocity doesn't match the tempo, if you get what I mean (I realize it's a pre-existing recording, re-ordered).
I like the quieter drums, but it would be nice to bring out the cymbals a bit more with judicious EQ and compression.
I like the idea of a trombone - played by you? I'm imagining long, julian priester-style notes.
Also it needs to be longer, but I think you know that.

I don't like what you did to Erik's beautiful song.
I would sing. And sort of let the original song play it s melody,
drums are nice. Still I want lyrics.

I think this is nice to listen to and keeps the feel of both, so in that sense it's a success.... the catch is that you aren't really saying anything new here and it's impossible to top jazz greats at their own game, you know? You obviously have the chops, so I'd say pick an angle, feeling, thought or whatever and really push the samples to tell your own story whether it be by utilizing clever sample chops, adding more instrumentation or effects or whatever.
This is nice as is and as an homage it's cool. It's just that I could see it being so much more.

i appreciate the criticism y'all.
susbet: the piano being off-beat at times is actually one of my favorite things about this track. i think it adds a human feel to it. i actually tried to rewrite it using a synth piano so i would have access to a greater range of chords et al. but it just sounded too precise and not at all comfortable. alas, i do not own a trombone and have been having a hell of a time trying to find a good sample. i'll have to check that julian priester out... and it will be longer. this is just the beginning...
onychahazel: i know how you feel about erik's piece. i do too. but i feel like just adding lyrics to his melody would be worse. it would be like drawing a stick-man on some famous masterpiece of art (i don't know anything about art so i couldn't give an example). it would be like adding lyrics to debussy. besides, though i can sing rather well, i must say, i'm not much of a lyricist. perhaps you should try it out...
mechp: thanks for the encouragement and i understand full well that i can't beat this guys but i'm not really trying to tell any sort of story here. this just seemed like the type of track i'd like to hear while slumped in the passenger seat of a car cruising down some lightly forested road after a rain with the sun darting in and out of the trees. or maybe ice skating. what i'm saying is it's more of a relaxing action track than a meaningful track. and it's not really meant to be an homage either. just something i wanted to hear. i do agree that it could, and hopefully will, be much more. i am not nearly done with this one.
