--> not quite "em" but the music is generated by a software made with max/msp.
the software is originally intended for microtonal music,
but works for tonal music as well...

this piece in particular was made only using white keys on the piano.

Sounds em to me. Sounds lovely to me. Is the piano sound from a preexisting sample bank, or did you build it? Can you elaborate on the role Max/MSP played?

here's software

howto:
1. click on "piano on" to turn it on
2. click "select" from right hand field and draw rectangles on canvas area
3. determine the length of canvas on the top right or bottom left
4. hit either/both play button

tuning 1 is just intonation tuning over 80
tuning 2 is just intonation tuning over 64
tuning 3 is 80 equal temperament
tuning 4 is 12 equal temperament
tuning 5 is white keys on 12 equal temperament

dev is number of divisions per rectangle.

tuning 1~3 are very microtonal and you may find them either interesting or disturbing.
they are not very regular tunings you hear on the top 40 kinda music...
tuning 4~5 are normal, usual tunings that you may find familiar.
tuning 1 is designed to suit the canvas so that if you draw rectangles in positions that are multiples of 10,
you will hear just intonation over 8, which is rather closer to lydian mode.
here's how tuning 1 sounds like

questions, suggestions, comments appreciated.

nicknotis,
thanks for a very quick comment.
i didn't expect comments this quick...

above is the software.
i used tuning 5 to make this music.
the piano sound is a little bit of both from sound banks and my build.
i took a few piano sounds from a pre-existing sound font and separate attack sound and sustaining sound using "spear", link
and rebuild my own piano sound.(piano sounds are included in the software as aiff files)
if you are max/msper, abstraction called "mono_piano" is the piano engine.

also forgat to mention that the original max/msp patch is included with the software for max/mspers.

my only criticism would be to program spaces in there.

otherwise, it's really a cool venture into nancarrowland

NANCARROWLAND IS A Happy place..

good work mang

yeah, this is great, i can't wait to play around with the software! this is like Nancarrow + Reich.

thanks for comments.

astroid,
i'm not sure what you mean by "space"...
musical space like silence? or buttons and numbers are too crumbled in the software?

jdg,
i like nancarrow's sprit but not too crazy about his music...

populus
if you are going for reich sound, make sure you use tuning 5.
but if you want to go la monte young, tuning 1 and 2 might work.

u should see if u could get time with a midified yamaha grand...
in school, we had one.. it was immense fun send it massive amounts of notes.

yeah, there was one in my school too. that was neat.
i'm waiting for a piano that can modify its tuning mechanically so it doesn't have to be 12 equal temperament all the time.
until then it looks like i'm stuck on digital media...

yessss..great ideas
needs more space, in the teh composition and the recording....let it breath.
love it!

This is way cool!

As soon as I heard it, I set out trying to recreate it with Live's arpeggiater and chord midi effects.

Couldn't really do it, but got some fun results.

Maybe I'll have a look at the software you posted now......

This software is great! Thanks for sharing.
