--> I was originally going to sample william burroughs, but me fooling around with a Last Poets record turned into this... for maximum enjoyment, please don't listen through laptop speakers (no bass!).

I am posting this for fun and seeking general advice from anyone who thinks they can give me pointers.
umm... compression? there is no compression on the track. Although I am beginning to be able to distinguish things the compressor does, I'm still scared shitless of them. (How would one set this up in Logic? assign all tracks to a bus, slap a compressor on and mixdown the output from the bus? what are the pros and cons of doing it some different ways?)
I intuitively feel that the key to making my mixes "pop out" in a playlist (or not sound overly-quiet when in between say... the rapture and king tubby) is compression. anyone?

This mix sounds fine as it is. It's a lot more dynamic and spacious, but also much more quiet than it would be if you had it mastered for mass consumption. But an over compressed mastering can sound better on shitty speakers can't handle the added detail that dynamic recordings can contain. There's also this idea out there that louder music sounds better. So everybody wants their record to sound as loud as or louder than everybody else's. It's a bad cycle for sound engineers and audiophiles. But it works just fine for people who listen to their iPods with the stock ear buds.

Go ahead and try throwing the logic compressors and/or limiters on both the master out and the specific tracks that get too quiet in places. But be warned that the logic compressors and limiters are pretty shitty. If you put one on the master out their weaknesses become especially evident.

Happy compressing.

sounds great as it is
compression (unless subtle) might make it worse because the loud sounds wouldnt stand out so much
i dont know about master compressors but compressors on individual tracks sidechaining each other is a good way to get the sounds to move around and make their own spaces between each other (sorry i dont want to try to explain that better)
