--> This is a piece that I did to show the capabilities of the Jurassic Park studio that I set while instructing at College in 1994. It is part two of the three movement DINOSAUR series.

Since this piece is 13 years old and vintage itself I thought I’d release Deborialis.

There are a lot of Vintage toys in the DINOSAUR series I will give a description of the gear involved. This was all Multi-tracked on a One Inch Eight track MCI machine from the late sixties or early seventies. It was mastered to Sony Digital PCM betamax tape.

The drum parts were done first after a sync track was laid. They involve a tr606 and a cr8000 linked to each other. The trig outs were sent to a Buchla 200 for bass drum and other control over the audio outs of the two drum machines. The strings are a combination of a Synclavier II System and a Kurzweil K-2000 trying to imitate a Vangelis cs80. The high pitched pad is also Synclavier. The falling and dipping windy sound is ARP2500 affected by the volume of the drum track and randomness. A tb303-like track was also added but it is really the ARP2500 again being controlled by a real tb303. I really miss my tb303 these days but back when I had it I mostly used it as a good CV/Gate sequencer. I didn’t use its normal sound as much. At the middle point the Synth Solo comes in. I used a Casio Midi Sax for the solo to control the k2000. Breath did filter and also controlled the delay length live. Volume as you can hear is a little hard to control but okay…. someday I’ll compress the track a little, but until I can land my hands on an eight track one inch reel to reel I’m stuck with this master. I did accidentally erase part of the solo and had to punch in another. See if you can find it. Also I didn’t like the brightness of the sound so I recorded the solo half speed and octave down, and then sped it back up to normal speed to double the frequency and add more brightness. Finally there is a low bass throb at the end that is done with a Steiner Microcon just playing the knobs w/o external control. There probably is a Sequential Pro-1 in here too but I forget what it is doing, possibly just acting as a controller/sequencer.

My next releases will be a little shorter and more recent. This one is 7 minutes. It takes a while to build but all the cool stuff happens once the solo comes in. Even though this is mixed to be played loud, this has some low bass from the Buchla and Synclavier acting as bass drum. Keep the EQ flat while listening.

Be patient, the link from LightningMP3 takes a little while.

this wasn't waht i was expectign! but good none the less. not a fan of some of the sounds... like the kick drum in particular.

that solo is quite weird, sounds almost like throbbing gristle until it gets melodic again.

some really cool sounds tho, like those pads, etc. good for being 94! than agian, now that i think about it, most electronic music from 94 is a tad on the cheesey side if not alot... this falls only a tad.

You've done all of that gear proud. This is really excellent 1994 stuff.

I really like the way the solo sounds, but I'm not convinced that it always works compositionally with the rest of the song. Maybe that interaction is what Psyingo though was a tad cheesy.

It's probably hard for many on this site to appreciate how different editing from a tape is. I think I'd hit my head with a hammer if I even tried to do so now. Props to your 1994 self for toughing it out.

Considering the top of the line PC in 94 was a 486, I don't imagine that it was possible to do much computer recording then?

Lastly, please don't remaster this with excessive compression. It ruins the dynamics. Just let people turn up the volume if they think it's too quiet.

dude, why didn't you just use flstudio?

this is 80's electro-kool! like day of the dead 3 soundtrack.

wtf, there is a day of the dead 3? i knew there was a two... but i think you are lying!

I ment the day of the dead circa 85

Actually back in 1994-5 i was testing out the first beta generation of Power PC Macs. even though these were running at 70-100mhz they were capable of recording 4 track input and possible 12-16 tracks output with Opcode Studio Vision or MAX and some of the ProTools second generation hardware. Also the Quadra 880av generation was capable of similar results.

However back then I was a retro rebel. The idea being that I was looking to learn the techniques of everyone who had come before me so I could compete against older electronic musicians. I did things like repair and rescue the old modulars, actually read all the dozen volumes of the Synclavier manuals, spliced tape, used CV/Gate and analog sequencing instead of using a midi-cv convertor. I even used a record cutter and stylus to make an acetate master for one project.

But working with analog tape is actually pretty easy if you have a good syncronization system to stripe one of the tracks with time code. I also had the incredible Garfield Time Commander. It was capable of reading any sync tone and out puting any other sync and also had the ability to move the sync ahead or behind. But actually this piece was mostly done with tracks recorded live other than the drums.

I will say that the Latency in computer based digital multitrack systems is driving me so crazy in the last 3 years that I am thinking of returning to analog tape. I saw this on my local cragslist and thought it was a great deal but i wouldn't have the room even if i had the cash.

Pretty system eh?

that system is totaly awesome. id part with 3000 in a secodn if i had it and lived in boston... with a van.

i like old dug up songs. squirrelly solo!
I got an m-audio card for $100 and i really don't have any latency problems now.
what really helped is getting away from MIDI and using USB2.0 MIDI keyboard.
I can actually play along with that thing without going crazy. Or maybe i'm just getting slow and older...?
Nice track though. that craigslist machine is insane. . . .
