Tom Phonic Live @ SyncTank
Release

--> So after a few months of waiting I got my recording of my set I played in October 2007 at a really cool bar on Ave A between 10th and 11th street in the east village. This night called SyncTank is really a great event. There are many types of people and quite a few electronic music enthusiasts. I've seen and met a lot of good electronic artists there having missed not one of their monthly nights. I played first for the night, and the crowd was quite bunched in faces I knew and faces I didn't.

I took some time to listen and critique the recording. I feel like over all I played these songs with way more emphasis that I had when I created them which is a plus. On the other hand, I did a pretty poor job of mixing them. I'm combating this as we speak cause I bought a Kaoss pad and plan getting really good at some mixing and dynamic techniques with it.

This is a raw recording straight from my stereo line of my mixer. First of all I was mixing in mono because I didn't use my head phones after the first 5 minutes and the sound system there is mono, but still recorded in stereo, so at times i hear things get skewed in ways I didn't intend, but what ever.

There is a part where it goes dead. I had a nice never ending echo going on there on my sp303, haha, I tried to apply another effect on it and on that machine if you hit an effect button with one already on, it turns off the effect. Regardless the crowd took a moment to applaud, and I started up again with the song I wanted to jam out next.

I think there are some ruff stuff towards the end. I was trying some new techniques with my sampler and remixing some studio stuff, after I took a minute (way too long of time) to set it up, I think I got it rockin again.

Anyway, let me know what you think. I am very particularly interested in hearing about the mix, vibe and sustainable interest it might possess.

Peace
-Tom

yay ef303!

AWE EF303, I just took him out for the Kaoss pad. He's so said sitting in my closet.

i got 2 in the closet

this is really nice tom

what are you sequencing with?

I'm using my korgms2000r and sequencing it on the dr202. I'm sequencing my er-01 for most of the lead and TB-303 sounds, I wish... but I used my dr202 for the gibberish drum noises and the er-1 for my lows and highs, the basic rhythm. I did some sampling and alot of effects on the signal flow. I feel like I'm catering to the sailor men I really glad you liked it, you might be my constant in my experiments.

this sounds amazing man
i really like the combination of layers you use, the drums especially. the top end is really hypnotic, sounds like you're having fun tweaking it around

what were you using the SP303 for?
i've got the SP404 and find it a pretty useful live tool, for triggering loops and applying effects to them or an external line

sounds really nice. great pics too. the melody is kick ass.

Very Spacioous and clean.
Very sweet as well

drewzle, I'm using the sp303 for triggering samples and effect like normal, but I think I had programed a beat on the pattern section too. yeah, i was having a blast for sure!

Thanks for the good words.

this has been getting a heap of replay. i really like the sound, and the evolving progression

it's cool that all these parts are coming out of different boxes
