Headlights - Some Racing, Some Stopping
Release
-->
a few weeks ago i got to record a live session at the daytrotter studio (www.daytrotter.com) with headlights. the studio was a fucking candy store: tons of old pedals, guitars, pianos (even a tacked piano!), and a great assortment of old analog synths and other keyboards. i even got to play upright bass on a few tracks, which i haven't gotten to do in several years.
anyway, due to the crazy amount of awesome gear we promptly decided to rearrange all the songs we were planning to record in order to take advantage of all the equipment they had. it was really fun and the engineers made it really effortless since we could just play everything live without having to worry about mic placement or anything.
this is one of the songs from that session. it's in this new free-flowing style we're working on, which usually involves someone playing a song while the rest of us improvise a noisy backdrop for the song to lay over. on this track, erin is singing and playing piano while our guitar player john is playing a juno-6 through a holy grail and memory man, i'm playing an old organ, tristan sings backup and whistles, and brett played tambourine. it all just kind of happened (this is the first take, and it's all played live together), which i think makes it feel kinda spontaneous.
not totally em, but about 60%. hope you like it. feedback appreciated!

This is brilliant. It certainly sounds like a first take but in a good way. Spontaneous and organic like you couldn't quite catch it that way again if you tried. I really like this. Top work!

This is really lovely. I love Erin's voice, the instrumentation, and the spacious nature of the recording.
