--> so, here's one of the first results of my experiments to play astroid power-up! type electro-jazz live.

what's happening, if it's not fairly obvious, is that every other bass drum hit is triggering the bass (which is being sent through my g2 and out to the evolver). The wankings on top of it are from a bunch of lfos, sample and holds, and triggers, routed semi-cleverly together, and then fixed into the chord changes by a quantizer which keeps pace with the bass notes.

what am i playing? i have my sweaty grips on a series of 16 sliders which control which algorithm is being played, the tone of the leads, and a bunch of other stuff. i have better control over the bass and the overall tone of the piece, too, but i didn't show that here. too busy wankin'!

so, be gentle, i know it's long and doesn't really pick up until about 3 minutes. it's been a long time since i've thought about live music, and i haven't gotten too much of a chance to make this very "musical" yet.

the drummer on this is Nate Wood-he recorded this on another track and then i re-appropriated it here.

oops there it is.

lol, john coltrain just got out of his grave, hit me, then told me to pass it on.

yeah for spelling his name wrong!

bastard. well i'm excited. me and about four other dorks will be very happy.

LOL. I WIN THE AWRD.

this hits me in a place that the other assface powersnap didn't. in a good way.

im excited. its visually noticable too.

i'm still crying.

astroid power-cry

LOL HHA..

tell me, what kinda math was needed for this?
what makes u a math hero?

i think u should call this:
astriod maff hero.

i have to listen now on headfons.. i wonder what your lowend is doing. i hope its big.

the last 1/5th is great. BTW.
DUH.. NAH.. NUH neeeenensnodrollllllllxlllxxlxl DUHHHHHHH NEEEEEEE
like that..

not so much math.
coupla lfo's.

yeah the last 1/5th is the best. i know. haven't really had much time to practice before i did this one, but got too excited and splurted it out all over here.

it's totally unmixed. no mix.

sounds great. tho. mixed or not.

its want more.
giant steps.... AGAIN?????? i'm at work now, i can't waƬt to listen properly to this

ok, lunch break (shitty display speakers tho)

I think it's a good formula to play those things live, the trick of synching bass and kick is cool to keep things tight. i guess that in front of an auidence this thing can get pretty exciting, expecially if the drummer can pick up room's feelings (well, not room=david i mean!).... this session doesn't sound much different from the recorded version on googleplex

just a question: how are you playing that giant steps melody? i cannot believe is only algorithmic programming and lfo's...

i think that you can add one more player to this set, just to give it more variety and interact with another "feeling picker" player, if you understand what i mean.

i agree with pierlu.. but i think it also holds on it own. Im impressed with the bass triggering concept... i think it works well.

It's amazing, but O so technical! I totally dig the idea behind it! I have a love/hate relationship with it. There are amazing excerpts and real bad excerpts so generally speaking i cannot give you an overall opinion. What I can say is: The drummer kicks ass! The Bass-sound that goes along too! The main synth on top has sometimes too much LFO's where it is rambling on like a madman! (Just found out that LFOs is an anagram of FSOL) !

I sometimes like the rambling and sometimes not! So you got my attention here and I really like the Idea behind it so it has a tendecie to go really good!

dood, runs at ~1:30 are so Bru... and awesome. I like the synth wanking stuff sounding sort of church organish in a way, I love those tones.
Its wankarific for sure. THis Nate Wood sounds a lot like D'Addario Parks.

OMG I can just picture you, in your wankariffic glory, tweaking sliders in your wifebeater t-shirt, biting your upper lip and closing your eyes, and straddling your controller in a perfect white-boy in-the-groove posture.

This is rad. Love the fast/slow dynamics-- i think this is more dynamic than your sequenced material. Good buildup of energy.

Bleeeeeeeeeeep fun.

thanks!
yeah i have all the same criticisms-too many lfo arp runs (of course) and it kind of drags on and on, no real interaction from drummer back to computer. i'm dreaming of more algorithms now-ones which have more melodic/scalar material. this is really just a kernel of an idea-i don't want the whole project to be sine wave jazz, either. other material is gonna sound way more autechre, and have the drum tones be processed, too.

pierlu-that's what made me so excited. it does sound just like the version of giant steps on googleplex to me.

the giant step melody was programmed note for note on a different sequencer which i switch to at the beginning and end.
