--> So, after I wiped my computer and installed updated versions of audio programs, I needed to play around with them to familiarize myself with the new setup. What better way to learn than to do so by making corny drum & bass pop songs, 1998 style. This is the first. It's not so coincidentally titled 1998. My lovely voiced, jazz singing friend Stina did the vocals. All that's missing is a trumpet solo. My corny 1998 self wants to integrate catchy drum & bass with jazz. That would be really inventive. Er, wait, I guess every other electronic person from 1998 - 2001 was trying to do that. Now I am too.

In any case, I want to pass this track through the EM411 filter before I call it done. So let me know what you think!

hmm, broken linky

It works for me. Does it not work for anyone else?

shit, loads now, wierd.

I like the track, it would be better in my humble opinion if you did some wicked manipulation of the original vox. She is flat sometimes, sometimes I hear the room alot...

I would love to hear you take the vox and turn them into a semi-rational presentation of the whole vocal picture. Maybe not glitching it out totally but sometimes literal and sometimes textural. The track itself is wicked!

again, thats just an opinion. Love your music!!!

yah you've definitely got the spook in this. and plenty of weird little noises like going on all the time. all the melodies and synths are just great. nice use of effects too. i am so jealous you have such a beautiful voice to use. you're pretty lucky. there is one sound in here that sounds just like something from "timeless" or "you & me" i can't remember which. it happens first during a breakdown. high-pitched squiggly thing

the first synth hit, loovely!

i agree with utofbu, the vocals sound great but they could get a little wetter imo

the drums you are using have a good dose of late 90's dnb processing style, but i think you'd need to layer an older sounding kit/pattern to get the whole picture.

also right now all the sounds/different parts you are using fall back and sit too well with everything else, i heard everything fairly equally, nothing really jumps out, my suggestion, drop in a house piano doing some rad chordwork. or yah the trumpet solo

all good suggestions, thanks guys

yah i'm pretty sure it was timeless

comparison

I should add, that I’m pretty sure the room reflections Utofbu heard are actually synthetic reverb I added to place Stina’s voice within the virtual space of the mix. But I too love the sound of an overtly digitally filtered vocal track. There are a few things I’m interested in trying that will hopefully achieve that without compromising the detail, dynamics, and audibility of her voice.

I should also say that I listened to Timeless and Saturnz Return a lot while making this, as well as some 4Hero stuff. Parallel Universes, from 1994, is just brilliant. It’s a shame that it’s now impossible to find. Does anyone here have it?

yah i really want to listen to mother, it sounds awesome. 1 hour long?!

IMO, 1997 > 1998 (not literally of course). Definitely hear the 4 hero influence...well produced.

Re: jazz & dnb: well, you could really actually do real jazz and integrate it with d'n'b rather than the cheezoid smooth jazz that most people did.

Bebop + d'n'b could be hott.

Wait, that's astroid territory.

I think I only listened to Mother once until recently, when I finally imported it and edited out all but the 20 minutes of meat. WTF was Goldie thinking with that track? It would have been another Timeless had he used a little restraint. There's 20 minutes of material stretched into an hour. I love that he brought in real strings, but their composition is almost uselessly sloppy. Saturnz Return is still great D&B though. Il think Timeless is better, but Saturnz is a much better recording.

I agree Roshi, 1997 was better. By 1998 there were a lot of established formulas that started to get abused. With this song, I was embracing cliche in hopes of creating a fun track. That's why I referred to 98 specifically.

There were some marvelous D&B related releases in 98 though. Spectrum by Jega remains a favorite despite the fact that it's a shitty recording. Somehow, the shittyness feels appropriate with the compositions. And Two Pages by 4Hero was also great despite mostly forgoing interesting synthesis. Utilizing acoustic instrumentation in a fantastically well recorded manner really worked. I guess that's the approach I was going for with Stina's voice in this song.

so i've tried listening to mother like 5 times now, and i always fall asleep after the man starts singing in the beginning opera part. i can't wait to find out the rest.
